MR. EAGLE!
In last week’s issue we asked, “What was the mascot’s name when the first human put on the iconic Eagle costume?” The correct answer is Mr. Eagle. First appearing in 1963, the mascot costume was provided by the North Texas Marching Band. Band director Maurice McAdow and Helen Wright, with what was then the business school, designed it with leather, plastic and chicken wire and a paper-mâché head. For the first football game of the season, assistant drum major Eric Brewster “flew” into the stadium, introducing fans to Mr. Eagle. Over time — and other names — that morphed into the Scrappy costume we know and love today.
Thank you to everyone who participated, and be ready for the next trivia contest in July.
