Summer 2025 Course Syllabus Posting Requirements

1. Mandatory Classes – Action Required by April 28

a. “Mandatory” means “singular course that must be taken for degree

completion, and there’s no substitute.” This includes courses that are

mandatory for General Education reasons (e.g., WRTG 1010) and courses

that are mandatory for reasons related to major/degree program (e.g., INTL

3000).

i. “Singular” is applied at the course level. If a course has multiple

sections, it is still a “singular course.” If a course has an alternative

that allows the student to complete a degree without an exception

being required, it is not a “singular course.”

b. For mandatory courses, a “syllabus” is single document, publicly available

(i.e., posted on the course schedule via CIS) that, minimally, includes: 1) course

outcomes and objectives, 2) a brief description of each major course

assignment or exam, 3) required or recommended reading assignments, 4) a

general description of the subject matter of each lecture/discussion, 5) a

preliminary schedule for major exams an assignments, 6) all current

mandatory institutional policies. For assistance, see:

https://cte.utah.edu/instructor-education/syllabus/

c. Mandatory syllabi must be posted by April 28

2. Non-Mandatory Classes

a. All classes not falling within the definition of mandatory above must post

syllabi in alignment with PPM 6-100

b. For non-mandatory classes, a syllabus must include: 1) course outcomes

and objectives, 2) a brief description of each major course assignment or

exam, 3) a preliminary schedule for major exams and assignments, if applicable 4) all

current mandatory institutional policies. For assistance, see:

https://cte.utah.edu/instructor-education/syllabus/

c. Per policy 6-100, non-mandatory syllabi must be posted to the course

schedule no later than 1 week before classes begin:

i. Full/First Session Summer 2025 Classes: Monday, May 5

ii. Second Session Summer 2025 Classes: Friday, June 13

3. How to Post

a. To publish a public link to your syllabus to the university Class Schedule, add

your Canvas link or syllabus file via Manage Class Links, available through

your CIS dashboard. See the full step-by-step instructions available from the

Registrar's Office.

b. Need help? Contact the Registrar's Office at 801-581-5808

or registrar@utah.edu.

4. Other Notes

a. These policies apply to BOTH graduate and undergraduate classes

b. Independent Study/Dissertation/Directed Reading-type classes must have a

posted syllabus. This document should include general outcomes, the

catalog description, all institutional policies, and a note that the nature of the

class dictates that schedule and content is negotiated between instructor

and student to meet the student’s research goals.

c. For additional details about syllabus requirements, how to post your

syllabus, and more, see: https://cte.utah.edu/instructor-education/syllabus/

CTE Opportunities for Faculty

  •  For the 2025-26 academic year, Martha Bradley Evans Teaching Fellows will focus on “Teaching Digital Natives: Supporting the Next Generation with Understanding and Compassion.” Gen Z learners, born between 1997 and 2012, are frequently called digital natives; technology is infused into nearly every aspect of their lives. This generation bore the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on education, and they are coming of age amidst tremendous social upheaval. As a result, Gen Z has been also described as more well-informed about current events than previous generations. We are seeking proposals for pedagogy projects that innovate education in ways that expand upon students’ application of digital learning skills and their awareness of current events, with the hope of fostering workforce-ready technological skills and compassion in University of Utah students.        Multiple fellowships of up to $10,000 will be awarded and may include funds for teaching replacement, undergraduate research assistant, project and professional development

For more information, see our Teaching Fellows page and application link. Deadline       is May 15.

  • CTE is searching for a new Associate Director! The position is open to tenured and career-line faculty and involves a .5FTE commitment to CTE.
