Holiday Gift Giveaway
VUMC's Holiday Gift Giveaway employee appreciation event will once again send out gift certificates to all employees that can be exchanged for a turkey, ham or fresh fruit and vegetables.
Team members employed with Vanderbilt University Medical Center on or before Oct. 23, 2023, will be eligible to receive their gift certificate in the mail on or around Nov. 7.
To ensure timely delivery of the gift certificates, you should ensure your mailing address is correct in Workday by Oct. 20th.

- VUMC increased the percentage by which it reduces patient care costs for research–the research discounted rate. For more information about what these rates mean for budgeting from clinical trial funding sources, see the ‘Budgeting for Clinical Trials‘ article, available on StarBRITE.
- Don't forget about VUMC's employment referral program. If you know someone who would be a great addition to VUMC, refer them for one of the qualified full-time positions, and you could earn from $2,000 up to $15,000 per qualified referral. Learn more here.
- The 2023 PD Symposium will be on October 7th, 2023 from 8am-noon at the VUMC Student Life Center. We are looking for volunteers to help, and we also have a few tables open for internal staff to be present and share information about open studies relevant to PD patients. Please e-mail Jessica Stroh, RN if you would like to volunteer or if you are interested in staffing a table to share information about your study.
- Our very own, Michael Carlson is participating in the 2023 Bike MS, Bike to Jack and Back, on October 7th. This event consists of a 70-mile bike ride from Franklin to the Jack Daniels distillery & then another 70 miles back the next day. The ride is to raise funding and awareness for the National MS Society. Learn more about this here. If you are interested in volunterring for this event, you can do so here.
- Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Office of Inclusion and Health Equity (OIHE) promotes inclusion and equity for everyone receiving care from VUMC and its related clinics and hospitals. Tune into Neurology grand rounds for the upcoming DEI/Health Equity GR lecture series with speakers Dr. Ari Nettles, on 10/6; Dr. Wally Clair, on 11/17; and Dr. Consuelo Wilkins, on 12/8. We will see you there!

- Dr. Katty Kang has been invited to speak at AES on epilepsy and proteostasis.
- Post-doctorate student Kirill Zavalin received an AES followship travel award. His AES abstract “Reduced GABA Uptake and Altered GABAergic Neurotransmission in Slc6a1(S295L) Knock-In Mouse Associated with Epileptic Encephalopathy” was selected for AES highlights. Congratulations!
- Dr. Katty Kang's office received a NIH Neuronal Communications study section review panel and a CURE Epilepsy grant review.
- Dr. William Nobis's R01 was funded! 1R01NS133169-01 : The role of brainstem projecting extended amygdala neurons in sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.
- Dr. T.A. McDonald had an oral presentation accepted with the Associated University Centers for Disability (AUCD) 2023 Conference in Washington, DC. Dr. McDonald will be giving an oral presentation within a multi-institution concurrent session titled: Government and Research Policies and Practices that Limit Understanding of Physical Health(care) Disparities/Inequities of Autists and People with I/DD.
- Dr. T.A. McDonald will also be presenting findings from a paper published earlier this year in the Journal of Autism and Development Disorders (JADD), Mind the NIH-Funding Gap: Structural Discrimination in Physical Health-Related Research for Cognitively-Able Autistic Adults.
- Dr. McDonald will be joined by Krisy Anderson and Dylan Cooper as co-presenters for two additional talks who discuss research practices and policies that limit our understanding of health disparities and healthcare inequities. Paul Shattuck- who is best known for Autism Indicators Report and for leading the A. J. Drexel Autism Institute at Drexal University- will moderate the talks.
