When art + science come together, anything is possible.

As I read about increased questioning of the value of higher education, I remain quite confident knowing the unique value that we offer in the College of Arts and Science. Of course, our students gain deep knowledge of the topics they study, engage with caring faculty members, have unparalleled immersive learning experiences, and graduate with strong career prospects. But they also graduate with proficiencies—fundamental capacities that help them to succeed as professionals and in life. Our innovative new undergraduate curriculum, the A&S College Core, is distinctively framed around five core capacities: (1) written and creative expression, (2) systemic and structural reasoning, (3) cultural and interpretive investigation, (4) data literacy and computational thinking, and (5) ethical and social engagement. As students progress through their four years, they build upon and expand those capacities, applying them to their coursework, their Immersion experiences, their internships, and their research. These capacities are universal, extending beyond individual disciplines, interests, and majors. Therein lies our value: We produce thoughtful, engaged citizens, successful professionals, and leaders prepared to make an impact on our complex and dynamic world.
