A Note from the Dean...

Welcome back, students, colleagues, and friends of the Huckabee College of Architecture!

Over the past year, faculty, staff, and students from both Lubbock and El Paso have collaborated to establish the college's Core Values and am pleased to present them this semester.

These values speak for us as a college and reflect who we are, how we interact with one another, and how we present ourselves to the world.

I am grateful to Dr. Tedd L. Mitchell, Chancellor of the Texas Tech University System, for his inspiring address to our college community during the first values summit meeting. I also want to thank Steve Sosland, Vice Chancellor for Leadership & Culture Development, and his team, whose leadership and expertise helped guide the college to this point.

Additionally, I extend gratitude to Executive Associate Dean Lesley Nall Washington and the crucial role she played in keeping the project moving forward and ensuring that our faculty and staff stayed informed throughout the process. I'm also thankful to each of my colleagues for their participation in the numerous meetings and committees that helped shape our final product. Finally, I'd like to thank Oscar Natividad for the brilliant design work that transformed the sketches from our first summit into the polished graphic iconography we see today.

These values are a product of the collective efforts of so many and not only do they represent our college, but more importantly, they guide the principles we live by and stand for, laying the foundation upon which we will build our new strategic plan.

I am excited for the new year and look forward to working with all of you to make the Huckabee College of Architecture the best it can be.

Have a great semester, and I hope you are all off to a strong start in 2025!

Upe Flueckiger

Professor & Dean, Dipl. Arch. SIA

This calendar year, he will lead studios and electives focused on exposing students to the underlying complexities of architecture, and how that can manifest in various forms ranging from highly integrative architecture, to drawings and sculptural experimentations dealing with fundamental ideas about organization and ordering systems.

Please join us in welcoming Daniel back to the HCOA and Texas Tech!

The symposium Orienting Imagination: What Are the Stakes on the Llano Estacado?, organized by the Huckabee College of Architecture in collaboration with the School of Art, will take place from January 31 to February 1, 2025 and will feature presentations on a range of topics, including the land, built environments, and phenomenological landscapes of the Llano Estacado. The symposium was awarded a grant of $5,000 from the Ryla T. & John F. Lott Endowment for Excellence in the Visual Arts, administered by the School of Art.

Orienting Imagination calls for tangible and intangible interventions addressing reciprocity, communication, and interdependent positionings between people and lands. The Symposium Steering and Review committee will include Assistant Professor Dr. Ke Sun, Joe Arredondo, Director of Landmark Arts in the School of Art, Chris Taylor, Director of Land Arts of the American West; Professor, Associate Professor Dr. Kevin Chua from the School of Art, and Lecturer Natalie Hegert from the School of Art.

All inquiries about the symposium may be directed to the Symposium Steering & Review Committee. Contact Dr. Sun at ke.sun@ttu.edu.

Huckabee College Alumni Raise Funds to Honor Former Professors - The James E. White, AIA and John P. White, AIA Graduate Fellowship, created in honor of John and Jim White, has raised more than $500,000 since the funds' establishment.

The fellowship, set to begin Fall 2025, was celebrated at the Beaux Arts Ball in late September of 2024, where about 200 alumni gathered to reconnect and honor the White brothers.

John and Jim began their careers as professors at the Texas Tech College of Architecture in 1971 and 1973, respectively. Over the years, numerous alumni have credited their professional success to the brothers, highlighting their mentorship, honesty, and humility. Among these is Chris Huckabee, who, along with his wife Robin, contributed a matching gift to support the fellowship.

John White passed away in November, 2024 at the age of 91. This fellowship is one of the enduring legacies of his dedicated years of service to the college and its students.

In an article published in Texas Tech Now, distinguished alumni of the college share how Jim and John have profoundly influenced their lives and careers. To learn more about the White brothers' lasting impact on the Huckabee College of Architecture, read the full article here.

To honor the legacy of Jim and John White and support the James E. White, AIA and John P. White, AIA Graduate Fellowship, contributions can be made at give.ttu.edu.
