The filing deadline for 2024 taxes is April 15, 2025!
ISSS will be sending out periodic reminders throughout the tax season to help you file your taxes correctly and on time.
|
Any international student who was present in the United States for any portion of 2024 is required to complete Form 8843 for this tax season. Students who received taxable income may be required to file additional forms as well.
Sprintax
Sprintax is a software system designed to help individuals with non-immigrant visas file their U.S. taxes. The program will ask you a series of questions and allow you to fill in information from your tax documents (i.e. W-2 and/or 1042-S), then the software will create your tax forms for you and you can file both your Federal Tax Return and your Ohio State Return online through this software. We highly recommend using Sprintax! Please note, however, that you will still need to file your Local Tax forms as well (more information below.)

For students who received income from Miami in 2024:
Please wait to file your taxes until you have received your 1042-S (for taxable scholarship income) and/or W-2 (for wages) from the Miami Payroll Office. We expect the W-2 forms to be issued by January 31st and the 1042-S forms to be mailed out by March 5th. It is important that your current mailing address is accurate in Workday, as that is the address to which the 1042-S forms will be mailed.
To update your address in Workday:
-
Log into Workday
- Click on Menu (top left)
- Click on Personal Information
-
In the “Change” column, click on Contact Information
- Click Edit and select the type of address you need to change
- Click on the Pencil icon next to the area you need to change
- Click the Submit button
The Payroll Office will be providing information about how to access Sprintax (a service to support nonresident employees and students with their US tax obligations) once they have issued the 1042-S forms. Be sure to check your MiamiOH.edu email!

Non-Miami Income and Tax Documents:
If you had income from any other source (i.e. off-campus employment/CPT, lottery or gambling winnings, dividends or sales of stocks or cryptocurrencies, interest on bank accounts) you should receive a tax document by early March for that as well. If you do not, please follow-up directly with the company or organization that provided the funds.
|
For students who received no income in 2024:
You may still use Sprintax, but will have to pay for each tax form generated by the program.
|
Students whose home countries have a tax treaty with the U.S. may have an 8233 form to sign each calendar year in order to claim a tax treaty benefit. You may contact Holly Neill in Payroll Services with questions.
Do NOT use TurboTax, H&R Block, or other software unless Sprintax indicates that you are a "Resident Alien for Tax Purposes." These companies do not offer the forms that are required for non-resident aliens. Using these companies or their software will cause you to file your taxes incorrectly if you are a non-resident alien.
Miami University staff are not qualified nor allowed to provide individual tax advice, but here are resources you can utilize if you have questions:
-
The ISSS website contains basic tax information
-
The Sprintax YouTube channel has a variety of helpful videos on a wide range of topics related to tax filing
-
The Sprintax blog contains a lot of useful articles on topics related to tax filing
-
Sprintax offers 24/7 live chat support that you may access within the program, or you may email the Sprintax team at hello@sprintax.com
|
Finally, Sprintax offers several live webinars that cover topics such as who must file, tax residency, FICA, State returns, implications of misfiling, as well as how to use Sprintax to prepare a compliant tax return.
