Singer-Songwriter Pays Homage To Her Longtime Inspiration

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 23, 2024) —
Following the release of her “meticulously crafted” (Billboard) MexiAmericana LP — recently featured by Ed Helms on Good Country’s “Ed’s Picks” — bilingual singer-songwriter Veronique Medrano honors Johnny Cash, an icon whose music has influenced her own style, with her “TexMex Country” version of “Folsom Prison Blues.”

Released today, Feb. 23 (just in time for The Man In Black’s Feb. 26 birthday), Medrano again pours her heart, soul, and multicultural life experience into her rendition of the 1955 hit.

“I have had such a long history with this song — it was one of two songs that I would play live, honkytonk to cantina,” Medrano says. “I have been a fan of Johnny Cash’s work since I was a teen and this song has been a staple of my live shows that fans have asked me to record for years. I'm proud to deliver it as a precursor to his Feb. 26 birthday, with my TexMex Country rendition that honors his legacy, while also highlighting the sounds of Mexico within his discography.”

“Medrano has meticulously crafted an essential album in the towering canon of Latino-country projects." — Billboard

"The zippy, accordion-accented Mexicali track sounds happy, but she means business as a badass woman. Medrano reminds us, ‘Ser una mujer es todo una guerra (Being a woman is constantly having to go to battle).’ A joyous, Latina rallying cry.” — Robert K. Oermann, MusicRow Magazine

"It's a Latin pop-to-country crossover that adds necessary breadth and depth to the rise in popularity for an area of the country that has produced Randy Rogers and Parker McCollum to Charley Crockett and Joshua Ray Walker, among many. Non-Latinx artists — especially those in Americana and country — have a history of borrowing but not crediting the root inspirations of aesthetics, sounds and styles familiar to Medrano's culture and heritage." — The Tennessean

"Medrano delivers the quintessential album for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in the Mexican American musical experience. The South Texas native has dedicated her career to celebrating the artistry and culture of her bordertown upbringing through her fearless country, Americana and Tejano music." — Wide Open Country
