Welcome home, Mavericks, to a new semester in what will be a milestone year at The University of Texas at Arlington. We’re marking our 130th anniversary in 2025 by celebrating more than 100 years of impact on Texas and our communities.
What started in 1895 as Arlington College—with a single classroom and a handful of students near the present-day site of our University Center—has become the 420-acre beating heart of the city. We’re a national research university that attracts talented students like you from across the U.S. and more than 100 countries, and we view it as an honor and responsibility to provide educational experiences that change the lives of those who come here.
Throughout the coming year, we’ll stage events for our campus and community that commemorate our impact and celebrate the Mavericks who have made history and broken barriers. One event you can participate in soon is a stylish celebration to design a commemorative tartan. The student who designs the winning entry will receive a one-time $1,500 scholarship! Stay tuned for details.

We kick off each semester with our Maverick Stampede, a series of fun and exciting events where you can meet students and explore student organizations and campus resources. There’s even a Maverick All-Nighter, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. beginning Jan. 25 at the University Center. It goes way past my bedtime but should be a great way to take a break from the books!
We want to help you find your place and your people, make your mark, and learn how to engage with UTA in new ways. Maverick Stampede is also a great way to score free food and fun UTA swag, so check out the full schedule and make a plan to attend a few events.

Another way to feel like part of the UTA community is to cheer on our Maverick athletic teams. The men’s basketball team is home at College Park Center on Jan. 16 and Jan. 23, while the Lady Mavs’ next home game is Jan. 25. I hope to see you there!

We have big plans and major projects in the coming year, including:
|
- the expansion of our signature Blaze Forward program, which makes a UTA degree more accessible to students regardless of financial background;
- the completion of Maverick Hall, our newest and largest residence hall;
- the opening of our Greek Life Community Center, which gives us a beautiful and state-of-the-art gathering spot on the west side of campus;
- additional faculty hiring that will strengthen our teaching and research capabilities; and
- finalizing our campus master plan to ensure our infrastructure and facilities can support our success.

We began 2025 with a major national award from the U.S. Department of Education that should fill you with pride. We are among the first six universities nationwide to win an award that celebrates universities for enrolling underserved student populations and equipping them for successful careers. In the words of the U.S. Secretary of Education, this award recognizes schools that are "doing the most to lift students up."
This University is all about access to higher education and ensuring student success—and that’s exactly what this award recognizes. You made a great decision to be a Maverick, and I am proud to lead this University.
It’s going to be a great year in Maverick Country!
