NIH RESEARCH FUNDING SUPPORTS JOBS, FUELS THE U.S. ECONOMY
New data from the United for Medical Research (UMR), of which the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) are members, reports that investing in NIH research yields significant economic and public health benefits, generating $2.56 for every $1 spent in FY24. Specifically in North Carolina, the $1.9 billion awarded from NIH generated $4.53 billion in economic activity. NIH funding not only supports crucial medical discoveries, such as the development of naloxone for opioid overdoses and advancements in heart disease prevention, but also fuels the U.S. economy by creating jobs and spurring innovation. The UMR report underscores that, in addition to supporting lifesaving research, the NIH provides “a powerful return on investment” to the federal government and American taxpayers by creating jobs and fueling economic activity across the country.
