Commodore Connection | June 2024
Vanderbilt Student

Welcome to the Vanderbilt Family!

We are delighted your student chose Vanderbilt University as their home away from home. They will flourish in our dynamic living-learning community that makes the Vanderbilt experience unique. Our outstanding faculty, administration and staff are here to care for and support them throughout their collegiate journey.

Commodore Connection is an email newsletter series created exclusively for parents of Vanderbilt students. You will receive monthly issues tailored for the parents of transfer students from June until Move-In Day in August. Once your student is on campus, you will receive a monthly edition that is sent to all undergraduate parents.

We are looking forward to seeing you on campus for Move-In and hope you will visit as often as you can. Please join us for Family Weekend, Sept. 6–8! It will be a weekend full of fun activities you won’t want to miss.

As your student starts their Vanderbilt journey, we hope you, too, will be an active member of our community. The university has a strong tradition of parent and family involvement, and there are many ways to get involved in your area, virtually and on campus. We also encourage you to connect with your local Vanderbilt Chapter through virtual and in-person events. Chapters help to connect alumni, parents, students and friends of the university. Taking part in these volunteer and social opportunities is a great way to feel the same sense of belonging that your student will feel while at Vanderbilt.

Be sure to visit the Transfer Students webpage for additional information. Move-in information and the transfer student orientation schedule will be available in early August.

Please know our office is here to serve and support you in the coming months and years.

First View Summer Program

The student leaders of FirstVU and the Office of Undergraduate Education offer the First View Summer Program, a five-week online transition program dedicated to launching success at Vanderbilt, focusing on college readiness to help students excel personally, socially, professionally and academically. FirstVU is a student organization dedicated to first-generation college students, defined as those whose in-home parents/guardians only attended a two-year higher education institution or who have a high school education or less.

The schedule includes eight two-hour virtual sessions. The program will culminate with a social event on Saturday, Aug. 17, as part of the warm welcome students will receive once they arrive on campus.

Online session dates: July 8–11, July 16, July 23, July 30, Aug. 6

Complete this form by June 28 to express interest in participating in First View.

Health Care Planning

A variety of services are available to students at Vanderbilt that assist in their overall well-being. From the Student Health Center to Student Care Network, students will have a place to go no matter what type of health matter they are facing.

It is important that your student arrive on campus with an understanding of their specific health care needs. The Parents and Family Programs office has compiled helpful information explaining on-campus and off-campus health practices and what students can do before their arrival to campus.

Student Health Insurance Plan

All degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students (excluding the Division of Unclassified Studies and consortium students) enrolled in 4-plus credit hours, a 0-credit research/dissertation course, or any other course that is considered to equate to full-time enrollment are automatically enrolled in—and will be billed for—the Student Health Insurance Plan, which is administered by Vanderbilt’s Plan Administrator, Academic HealthPlans.

Students with comparable health insurance coverage may request to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan by completing the waiver form. The waiver form will become available early July 2024. The deadline to submit the waiver form is Aug. 1.

Student Renter’s Insurance Requirement

Students are required to maintain adequate property and liability insurance while living on campus.

We recommend that you discuss your specific insurance needs with an authorized insurance agent. Required insurance may be provided by a standalone Renter’s Insurance Policy or by endorsement or extension from a Homeowners Insurance Policy maintained by the student or by a parent/guardian/family member.
