Winter Break Hours Updated
We know the many iterations of building hours during the long break between terms can be a little confusing. It doesn’t help when the Scoop messes them up — our apologies — but reduced Smith Operations staff during the holidays and the opportunity to concentrate on maintenance and custodial work makes the limited access necessary. Here is what to expect this break (and, hopefully, we’ll get it right this time):
Dec. 4 to 10 (finals week):
  • Normal access
Dec. 11-17:
  • PSU ID general badge access will be 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. M-F.
  • The general public is welcome at the entrance on SW Broadway from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. M-F.
  • Special event access will be arranged at the SW Broadway entrance.
  • Portland State staff and student staff with extended badge hours will have their typical access.
  • Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 16, 17) Smith will be closed to PSU ID general badge and general public access.
Dec. 18-Jan. 1 (two weeks):
  • PSU ID general badge access to Smith will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. M-F
  • No general public hours all days.
  • Special event access will be arranged at the SW Broadway entrance.
  • Portland State staff and student staff with extended badge hours will have typical access.
  • Smith closed to general PSU ID badge access Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Closed for the holidays on Monday, Dec. 25, and Monday, Jan. 1, 2024.
Smith will return to its normal term hours on Tuesday, Jan. 2
Also:
  • Delivery and pick-ups at the Amazon Hub will be suspended during most of the break. The ordering app should alert you when the Hub is not available.
  • During the break, most building amenities such as the food court, coffee shop and bagel shop will close Dec. 11 until early January.
  • The University Market will reduce hours to 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from  Dec. 18 to Dec. 29. They will be open the weeks of Dec. 11 and Jan. 2.
Have a safe and pleasant break.

Artwork on the Move

PSU’s Jason Erik Washington Art Committee will be installing work in Smith’s second-floor lounge next summer. To make space in an active student area — — where the work can be viewed as well as facilitate other elements of the memorial project, such as discussion and classwork — Gwen Davidson’s “Large Drawing 2” (1988, a gift of Douglas Lubotsky, seen above) at the south end of the lounge is being moved during winter term.
We hope to relocate the painting in Smith and are working with the Portland State Art Collection Advisory Committee on the drawing’s future home.
In the meantime, stop by the second-floor lounge and enjoy this elegant work.

Holiday Door Contest on the Fourth Floor

Once again this year, staff members in the Multicultural Retention Services center are turning holiday spirit into competition with a “decorate your door” contest. Drop by the MRC (SMITH 425, right next to the elevators) and check out some inventive holiday cheer.
Facilties department employees remove the skybridge door frame in preparation for new doors leading to Fariborz Maseeh Hall on the fourth floor of Smith.
Speaking of the fourth floor, work is being completed on the replacement doors for the skybridge to Fariborz Maseeh Hall. Since this photo was taken, doors have been hung and we are awaiting installation of access control. The new doors will weigh less and should be easier to open.
Food Pantry in former Green Zebra store: This term, the Pantry is operating out of the former grocery in Parking Structure 2, 1704 SW Broadway. The Pantry will close Dec. 18 as they transition back to their renovated space in the basement of Smith.
