Department of Energy (DoE) / Office of Science (SC) / Fusion Energy Sciences Program: Fusion Innovation Research Engine (FIRE) Collaboratives Funding Opportunity Announcement #: DE-FOA-0003361 Synopsis: Supports FIRE Collaboratives as a collection of centrally managed teams as a facilitator for collaboration and coordination with the basic science research program. FIRE hopes to foster synergy and alignment of goals, accelerating progress towards the realization of fusion energy as a clean, and sustainable power source. FIRE Collaboratives are expected to function as accelerated, results-driven research projects utilizing real-time results to inform research direction, allowing for agile adjustments, and potentially discontinuing projects if deemed necessary based on outcomes or a pivot in priorities. Additionally, FIRE Collaboratives prioritize end-use inspired research, where the research strategy is inclusive of insights from end-users, such as fusion energy system developers. Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Program: Creating Equitable Pathways to STEM Graduate Education Synopsis: Supports the partnership between Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and graduate programs nationwide. In addition to resourcing the unique experiences of faculty and students at MSIs, grant awards will support sharing MSIs’ institutional know-how on equitable undergraduate and graduate education, as well as modeling that know-how to create systemic changes that enhance pathways from MSIs to master’s and doctoral degree programs in astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, data science, Earth sciences, economics, engineering, marine science, mathematics, physics, and statistics at partner institutions. Three types of grants are funded: Planning, Seed and Implementation. Please consult the solicitation for details on each type. AXA Program: AXA Chairs Synopsis: Supports senior investigators (doctorate, plus 10 years minimum) to make significant advancements in the development of a research area within a host institution that is in line with its long-term strategy. The research program must demonstrate its scientific originality and innovative character, as well as be part of the three main research fields AXA supports projects in health, climate, and new technologies and socioeconomics. It aims at creating a full-time academic position in the host institution and fostering a step change in the career of the appointed AXA Professor, who is expected to spend their full time at the host institution. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Predoctoral Research Training Grant for the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program NOFO #: PAR-21-337 Synopsis: Supports predoctoral and postdoctoral research training programs, which allows PIs and / or Program Directors to select trainees at various “hubs” (see solicitation for more details on hubs and numbers of trainees per hub) and develop a program of coursework, research experiences, and technical and/or professional skills development appropriate for the selected trainees. Each program should provide high-quality research training and offer opportunities in addition to conducting mentored research. The grant offsets the cost of stipends, tuition and fees, and training related expenses, including health insurance, for the appointed trainees in accordance with agency-approved support levels. Award details: The amount of funding that applicants can request depends on the amount of NIH funding they receive, and hub tiers as described in the NOFO. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Postdoctoral Research Training Grant for the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program (T32 — Institutional National Research Service Award (NRSA) NOFO #: 21-338 Synopsis: Supports established an investigator in the scientific area in which the application is targeted and capable of providing both administrative and scientific leadership to the development and implementation of the proposed program. The PD/PI will be responsible for the selection and appointment of trainees to the approved research training program, and for the overall direction, management, administration, and evaluation of the program. The PI or Program Director will be expected to monitor and assess the program and submit all documents and reports as required. The PI has responsibility for the day-to-day administration of the program and is responsible for appointing members of the Advisory Committee (when applicable), using their recommendations to determine the appropriate allotment of funds. Pop Culture Collaborative Program: Grants Synopsis: Supports non-profits and for-profit organizations and individuals for projects that drive transformational experiences for mass audiences through stories, media and social media. These include initiatives focused on the development and distribution of content, design of audience engagement strategies, and the creation of immersive narrative environments through cultural, narrative, and behavioral change approaches. The vision of the “Collaborative” is to support the growth of a pop culture for social change field capable of building the yearning in most Americans to actively co-create a just and pluralist culture in which everyone is perceived to belong, inherently, and is treated as such. Award details: Depending on the type of grant, funding ranges from $5K for small, experimental projects to $200K for multi-year culture change programs. University of Wisconsin – Madison / Institute for Research in the Humanities Program: Fellowships Synopsis: Supports scholars across all areas of the humanities, and serves as a residency for awardees of an American Council of Learned Society (ACLS) fellowship holder — or who are recipients of other grants — to spend time at the Institute. The Institute also offers external stipend fellowships of their own: (1) The Solmsen Fellowships for scholars whose focus is European history, literature, philosophy, politics, religion, art and culture in the classical, medieval, and/or early modern periods before 1700); and (2) Kingdon Fellowship is for scholars working in the humanities in the historical, literary, artistic, and/or philosophical studies of Christian and/or Jewish religious traditions and their role in society. Award details: Solmsen and Kingdon Fellowships provide $60K stipend, office space, limited support services, and access to university facilities (libraries) for academic year. American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Program: Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science Synopsis: Supports and recognizes early-career scientists and engineers who demonstrate excellence in their contribution to public engagement with science activities. For the purposes of this award, public engagement activities are defined as the individual’s active participation in efforts to engage with the public on science- and technology-related issues and promote meaningful dialogue between science and society. Eligible nominees are scientists and engineers and are within 7 years of completion of their doctorate. Nominators may be universities and other institutions. Self-nominations are permitted. Award details:A monetary prize of $5K, a commemorative plaque, and recognition at the AAAS Annual Meeting. Simons Foundation Program: 2024 Pilot Award Synopsis: Supports investigators — particularly those new to the autism field — for exploratory ideas considered higher risk but with the potential for transformative results, particularly those with novel hypotheses for autism. Applicants are encouraged to consult with experts in autism research to ensure their projects are relevant to the human condition. Applicants are encourage to propose research that link genetic or other ASD risk factors to molecular, cellular, circuit or behavioral mechanisms and set the stage for development of novel interventions, including work in human subjects. Award details: Up to $300K over a two year period, and including 20% indirect costs. United States Geological Survey Program: Cooperative Agreement for CESU-affiliated Partner with Californian Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit Funding Opportunity #: G24AS00372 Synopsis: Supports research and evaluation of evapotranspiration (ET) models across a multitude of wetlands sites in the United States. Using data from the Open Evapotranspiration platform (OpenET) – a satellite-based ET cloud computing and data services platform – in combination with a network of ground data, consideration of model data components for ET assessment will help provide better understanding of biophysical processes and model methods structures relating to accurate characterization of wetlands-based hydrologic ecosystems. Research products of interest include - a summary of ET in wetland settings including what is known about ET mechanisms; - analysis of OpenET model performance using flux tower data where possible and assess additional wetland sites for enhancement of a benchmark evaluation dataset - identification of key components affecting wetland surface energy balance closure and investigate energy and water budgets on various wetlands in the United States - leverage available in-situ micrometeorological data and satellite remote sensing information to complement current ET models and provide a synthesis summary of alternative ET measurements at wetlands sites to improve information gap analyses Award details: Award will be made for a multiyear agreement, not exceeding 28 months. Fisheries Headquarters Program (FHQ) Program: FY25 Saltonstall-Kennedy Pre-Proposal Competition NOFO #: NOAA-NMFS-FHQ-2025-26840 Synopsis: Supports research and development projects addressing aspects of U.S. fisheries, including, but not limited to, harvesting, processing, marketing, and associated business infrastructure. Priorities of this program are aimed at promoting and developing United States fisheries by growing awareness of and demand for products made from U.S. fishery resources, improving infrastructure, ensuring sustainable harvest and seafood supply, and supporting vibrant recreational fishing opportunities. Applications should address one or more of these 3 priorities: - Promotion and demand (of U.S. fisheries) - Development, infrastructure and capacity building - Science and technology that enhances sustainable U.S. fisheries Award details: Budget requests should be greater than $25K, but should not exceed $500K. Department of the Interior / Bureau of Reclamation Program: Desalination and Water Purification Research Program: Pitch to Pilot FY 2024 NOFO #: R24AS00324 Synopsis: Supports research to address the need to reduce the costs, energy requirements, and environmental impacts of treating impaired and unusable water. Eligible projects are innovative pilot-scale technologies or processes tested at flow rates above one gallon per minute using natural water sources (rather than synthetic or laboratory-made feed water). Innovative is defined as an approach, process, and/or technology that is not being implemented at full scale in the United States but shows promise for scaled-up implementation in the field of water treatment. This pilot testing is typically used to determine the technical, practical, and/or economic feasibility of a process or technology. Award details: Up to $300K. Non-Federal cost share is not required but is strongly encouraged. The CRISIS initiative invites interdisciplinary research to take first steps in creating evidence-based solutions that strengthen human resilience, security and quality of life by addressing seemingly intractable challenges that confront society. NSF / Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences - Division of Chemistry Program: Centers for Chemical Innovation (CCI) (Phase 2 – major research centers) Synopsis: Supports research centers focused on major, long-term fundamental chemical research challenges. CCIs that address these challenges will produce transformative research, lead to innovation, and attract broad scientific and public interest. CCIs are agile structures that can respond rapidly to emerging opportunities through enhanced collaborations. CCIs integrate research with strong broader impacts, including innovation, education, broadening participation, and informal science communication. The FY 2024 Phase I CCI competition is open to projects in all fields supported by the Division of Chemistry, and must have scientific focus and significant potential for transformative impact in chemistry. The NSF Division of Chemistry particularly encourages fundamental chemistry projects aligned with articulated budget priorities, including Advanced Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, Quantum Information Science and Climate Research and Sustainability. FY 2025 Phase II proposals result from Phase I awards initiated in FY 2022. There is no minimum or maximum number of investigators in a Phase II proposal. The teams may include investigators from other disciplines, but the CCI should retain a clear focus in scientific areas supported by the NSF Division of Chemistry. Award details: NSF anticipates up to one new Phase II award (up to $4M per year for 5 years) as a cooperative agreement, pending availability of funds and submission of sufficient quality proposals.
