Here at the Hub we are big fans of connecting with students to help them embrace their intrinsic motivation for learning. It's always been at the heart of student-centered pedagogy but it feels even more urgent with ever-improving AI tools. On the other hand, the Hub also promotes structure which helps students organize their time. You can't just let students hand in their work whenever. It's a kindness to students (and a necessity for your grading load) to not let them leave all their work to the last days of the semester.
Balancing deadlines and intrinsic motivation is the subject of this Chronicle article, How to Embrace the Power of Extrinsic Motivation in Class, by James Lang and Kristi Rudenga. Kristi shares how creating her teaching center budget is drudgery (I feel your pain, Kristi!) and motivated by external deadlines and consequences. It is also necessary for the work she enjoys: connecting with faculty. Their subtitle is a great summary, "Grades and deadlines don’t have to be the bad guys of college teaching," and the article is full of teaching tips to utilize extrinsic motivation for deep learning.
