October 2, 2026

Dear Eagles:

We are writing to update you on important information regarding the Frequency Apartments. American University will not renew its lease for the Frequency Apartments after the 2026-27 academic year. The Frequency will remain an AU housing option through August 14, 2027, the final day of resident occupancy. No current resident is being asked to move because of this decision.

We recognize that the Frequency has been a popular housing option for many students, particularly those seeking apartment-style living close to the Metro, and Tenleytown neighborhood amenities. Students have helped make the Frequency an important part of the AU residential experience, and we appreciate the community that has been built there over the past several years.

This decision reflects AU’s focus on investing in the on-campus residential experience and the housing facilities the university operates directly. AU is working to improve existing residence halls through updated furnishings and room configurations, and to strengthen options for upper-division, graduate, and law students.

Current Frequency students will continue to receive housing and residence life services through the end of the lease. Students considering housing for 2027-28 will receive information about available options and the selection process before applications open. The university is committed to providing a variety of residential choices and maintaining a high-quality living experience for all residents.

We understand that you may have questions about how this decision could affect future housing options. The university will provide updates throughout the transition process and will communicate important information, timelines, and available housing choices in advance of the 2027-28 housing selection cycle.

Thank you for your partnership and feedback as we strengthen AU’s American University's residential experience for all students.

Sincerely,

Dayne Hutchinson, Ph.D.
Interim Vice Provost for Student Affairs

Johni Amos, Ph.D.
