“We tend to think that equality is about treating everyone the same, when it’s not. It’s about fairness. It’s about equity of access.”

| IUP Values Me
Student Spotlight: Dejanae Lyles
Dejanae is a human resource management major and will graduate this May. She is treasurer of NAACP-IUP and fundraising chair for Collegiate Women in Progress (CWIP). In addition to having financial responsibility in these roles, she has helped increase membership for both organizations. Dejanae assists all members of these student groups in any way needed and has been a voice and advocate for her peers. During the 2023 Homecoming parade, as a member of the DEI Student Alliance, she led the CWIP and NAACP in a unity demonstration. Dejanae proudly serves the IUP community with breast cancer awareness activities, donations and distribution of feminine products across campus, and other advocacy initiatives for the women of IUP. We thank you, Dejanae!
Staff Spotlight: Dan Burkett
Dan is in his 32nd year at IUP, teaching mathematics in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. For the last 15 years, he has served as dean’s associate for the Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He is also a faculty liaison and academic advisor for Exploratory-STEM students in the University College. Dan is a proud alumnus, who earned his undergraduate degrees from IUP in math and computer science. Throughout his tenure at IUP, he has worked to support students in various ways, including as a former chair of the IUP LGBTQIA Commission, as a member of the President’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion, and as a current member of the IUP Care Team. We thank you, Dan!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
