Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I am always amazed at the range of activities conducted by PCEC students, alumni, faculty, and staff, as you will see reflected in this newsletter.

We are looking forward to hosting the West Michigan Regional FIRST Robotics Competition on Friday, March 22nd and Saturday, March 23rd at the Grand Valley State University Field House. This all-day event is free to attend and a great event for families of all ages – we hope to see you there!

Our hope is that students involved in FIRST Robotics and other K-12 outreach activities will develop an interest to pursue education and careers in STEM. I’d like to express my sincere thanks to everyone reading who is involved in these remarkable programs.

With the launch of a new college focused on computing on the horizon, the growing cybersecurity undergraduate program recently received National Security Agency validation, a step toward becoming a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. Dr. Andrew Kalafut, associate professor of computing, said the validation process considers a program's curriculum, continuous improvement, continual activity for faculty and external opportunities for students.

University experts and business leaders advocated for hiring more international students during an event hosted jointly by Grand Valley and West Michigan Tech Talent.

"These are extremely motivated individuals who would be a great addition to any company," Dr. Ted Jones of Global Detroit said, adding that 50 percent of all international students studying in the U.S. are in STEM fields.

Congratulations to PCEC's Dr. Samhita Rhodes for receiving the Glenn A. Niemeyer Award.

When giving the keynote presentation at the Faculty Awards Convocation on February 15, Dr. Rhodes said her faculty colleagues and her students are the reasons she finds joy in teaching at Grand Valley.
