Accolades
Moh El Naggar, Physics and Astronomy, has been elected to the Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology.*
Eric Webb, Marine and Environmental Biology, has been elected to the Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology.*
*Note: The Academy of which Dr. El-Naggar and Dr. Webb have been elected as Fellows, is the honorific leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology, and recognizes excellence, originality, service, and leadership in the microbial sciences.
Elizabeth Durst, Writing Program, has been awarded the prestigious Award for Distinguished Service to The American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL), for her leadership as Executive Director over a period marked by the pandemic and increasing attacks against scholars in Russian, even as relations between Russia and the West worsened.
Paul Lichterman, Sociology, is a recipient of the Humboldt Research Award conferred by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The award is given in recognition of the award winner’s entire academic record to date. In addition, award winners are invited to carry out research projects of their own choice in cooperation with specialist colleagues in Germany.

Dornsife’s Center for Music, Brain and Society recently received generous funding from an anonymous donor. This initial investment from the donor will support the development of a music therapy graduate training program within the Center that integrates, and is grounded in, neuroscience research at USC.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) 2024 Program: University Nuclear Leadership Program (formerly the Integrated University Program), Research and Development Grant, Fiscal Year 2024 NOFO #: 31310024K0001 Synopsis: Supports research and development (R&D) for nuclear science, engineering, technology, and related disciplines to develop a workforce capable of supporting the design, construction, operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear materials. University R&D activities provide an opportunity to complement current, ongoing NRC-led research. Specifically, supports research, development, demonstration, and commercial application of new and advanced nuclear technologies. In this regard, social science research will be considered under this announcement (e.g., projects that would foster the development of innovative community engagement strategies, including the incorporation of principles of equity and environmental justice). NSF / Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) – Division of Social and Economic Sciences Program: General Social Survey Competition Solicitation #: 24-537 Synopsis: Supports investigators who possess the theoretical, methodological, measurement and managerial skills, as well as organizational resources, to undertake a large-scale survey data collection project to submit proposals to conduct the General Social Survey (GSS) and the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) & United States surveys. The GSS is a personal interview survey that collects data on a wide range of topics: behavioral items such as group membership and voting; personal psychological evaluations, including measures of happiness, misanthropy and life satisfaction; attitudinal questions on such public issues as abortion, crime and punishment, race relations, gender roles and spending priorities; and demographic characteristics of respondents and their parents. Terra Foundation for American Art Program: Convening Grants Synopsis: Supports programs that foster exchange and collaboration, such as workshops, symposia, and colloquia. Programs should advance innovative and experimental research and professional practice in American art and address critical issues facing the field. Requests for support is also considered for convenings intended to inform projects in their early stages, which will benefit from the learning and practice that can be developed through dialogue. Award details: Grants range from $10K to $25K, of which up to $5K may be used for proceedings and publication costs. American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Program: ACLS Leading Edge Fellowships Synopsis: Supports and place recent humanities Ph.D.’s (conferred between September 1, 2019 and August 31, 2024) with nonprofit organizations promoting social justice in their communities. Fellows take on substantive roles that draw on the skills and capacities honed in the course of earning the humanities Ph.D., including advanced communication, research, project management, and creative problem solving. The fellowships are designed to foster mutually beneficial partnerships between fellows and their hosting organizations. Hosting organizations are listed in the announcement. Obama Foundation Program: The [Obama-Chesky] Voyager Scholarship for Public Service Synopsis: Supports rising 3rd-year college students, interested in careers in public service, for and through a two-year, leadership development and scholarship program. Through a transformational combination of barrier-reducing financial aid, an immersive work-travel experience, and a robust network of leaders and mentors, the Voyager Scholarship is designed to inspire, empower, and connect the next generation of leaders and equip them with the tools and resources they need to launch their careers in public service. Award details: Students will receive up to $25K per year in “last dollar” financial aid for their junior and senior college years. Students will receive a $10K stipend and free Airbnb housing to pursue a summer work-travel experience between their junior and senior years of college. After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2K Airbnb travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20K. American Psychological Foundation Program: Lorraine D. Eyde Fund Grant Synopsis: Supports early career investigators (no more than 10 years postdoctoral) for research investigating issues surrounding the ethical and professional use of psychological tests. Research proposals can focus on elements of testing such as privacy and confidentiality; quality of tests (reliability and validity); tests in employment selection; test construction; qualifications of psychologists utilizing tests; race, gender, and transgender issues in testing; and inherent bias in tests and testing procedures that disproportionately impact underserved or marginalized populations. Researchers from a broad range of content areas are encouraged to apply, including neuropsychology, personality, vocational psychology, educational testing and entrance examinations, cognitive ability testing, and other fields where testing plays a prominent role. Grant proposals are not limited to the examples cited above and may include a substantial range of issues related to test use and ethics. American Psychological Foundation Program: Joseph B. Gittler Award Synopsis: Supports early career psychologists (10 years or less since terminal degree) who continue to make scholarly contributions to the philosophical foundations of psychological knowledge, particularly in the last 5 to 10 years. As noted in the accolade section of the Weekly, Dornsife Psychology Professor Henrike Moll is one of the most recent recipients of this award. Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Program: Damon Runyon Fellowship Award Synopsis: Supports postdocs whose Ph.D. conferral is between September 15, 2024 and March 15, 2024 and who joins the sponsor’s lab on after March 15, 2023, for theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of cancer and the search for its causes, mechanisms, therapies, and prevention. Awards will be made to institutions in support of a fellow under the direct supervision of a sponsor—a scientist (tenured, tenure-track, or equivalent) who can provide mentorship to the fellow. Application requires 3 letters of recommendations. Award details: The first-year stipend is $70,000, with an additional $2,000 expense allowance. The foundation will also provide a dependent child allowance of $1,000 per child per year. Fellowships are granted a four-year term, with second-, third-, and fourth-year funding contingent on satisfactory progress reports. National Endowment for the Humanities (and Japan-United States Friendship Commission) Program: Fellowships for Advanced Social Science Research in Japan Synopsis: Supports research and writing on modern Japanese society and political economy, Japan's international relations, and U.S.-Japan relations. The program encourages innovative research that puts these subjects in wider regional and global contexts, is comparative and contemporary, and contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the general public’s understanding. Appropriate disciplines include anthropology, economics, geography, history, international relations, linguistics, political science, psychology, and sociology. Awards may result in articles, monographs, books, e-books, digital materials, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. In addition to mid-career and senior scholars, NEH especially welcomes applications from junior scholars — those who have received their terminal degree within the last 7 years. Award details: Maximum award is $5K per month for 6-12 months. National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Program: NIJ 2024 Measurement of Community Perceptions Grants.gov Opportunity Number: O-NIJ-2024-171984 Synopsis: Supports research that develops and tests innovative methods to provide representative samples that are accurate across microgeographic areas, cost-effective, able to be implemented frequently, and scalable for use in municipalities of various sizes. Applicants are encouraged to propose multidisciplinary research teams to build on the complementary strengths of different methods and areas of subject matter expertise. NIJ seeks proposals for either of 2 topics: (1) Survey methods for sampling, estimating, and reducing biases in the measurement of community perceptions; and (2) The use of existing and innovative data sources for the measurement of community perceptions. In addition to considering proposals that include meaningful engagement with the people closest to the subject of study, NIJ also seeks proposals that include consideration and measurement of issues of diversity, discrimination, and bias across age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation, as applicable. Department of Defense / Office of Naval Research (ONR) Global Research Activity Program: Global X Challenge 2024 FOA #: N0001424SB001 Synopsis: Supports international researchers to collaborate, generate revolutionary ideas, and show proof of concept to achieve revolutionary capability advances with both military and commercial value in the multidisciplinary technology challenge areas described below that will succeed. Potential enabling disciplines include chemistry, physics / nuclear physics, material science, microbiology / synthetic biology; artificial intelligence / machine learning, etc. ONR Global invites outstanding international researchers to form multi-national, multidisciplinary teams to address one or more of these capability challenges. Individual researchers may participate on more than one research team. Teams are responsible for establishing non-disclosure agreements among team members, if necessary. Department of Energy (DoE) / Office of Science – Fusion Energy Science (FES) Program: Research on General Plasma Science (GPS) Collaborative Research Facilities (CRF) FOA #: DE-FOA-0003267 Synopsis: Supports external collaborations with the GPS Program supported CRFs with seed funding and increase participation at and productivity of these facilities. The aim is to provide an opportunity to external collaborators or users of these facilities to acquire experience and preliminary data; carry out data analysis and/or validation resulting in peer-reviewed publications; and transition to a full three-year research program available through other funding opportunity announcements. FES GPS programs supports in these 3 core research areas: - Basic Plasma Science (BPS) - Dusty / Non-neutral Plasma Physics - Low Temperature Plasma (LTP) Science Award details: DoE anticipates $2M appropriation for the current year and future years to support awards. NSF / Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences / Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences Program: Developmental Science Solicitation #: 24-544 Synopsis: Supports basic research that increases understanding of perceptual, cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural, and biological processes related to human development across the lifespan. Research supported by this program will advance knowledge of the underlying developmental processes that support social, cognitive, and behavioral functioning, thereby illuminating ways for individuals to live productive lives as members of society. Specifically, seeks research that (1) involves diverse methodologies and theoretical perspectives; (2) includes participants from a range of communities, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultures; and (3) helps diversify research project leadership (PIs and co-PIs), ideas, and approaches via equity-centered collaborative models. Proposals that include participants from historically marginalized groups and/or groups underrepresented in developmental science research should demonstrate cultural competence within the research team to conduct research with these communities. PIs should provide clear evidence of equity-centered collaborative practices with community members. NSF / Directorate for Biological Sciences / Division of Environmental Biology (DEB) Program: Core Programs Solicitation #: 24-543 Synopsis: Supports research and training — including interdisciplinary — on evolutionary and ecological processes acting at the level of populations, species, communities, ecosystems, macrosystems, and biogeographic extents. DEB encourages research that elucidates fundamental principles that identify and explain the unity and diversity of life and its interactions with the environment over space and time. Research may incorporate field, laboratory, or collection-based approaches; observational or manipulative studies; synthesis activities; phylogenetic discovery projects; or theoretical approaches involving analytical, statistical, or computational modeling. All DEB programs also encourage proposals that leverage NSF-supported data networks, databases, centers, and other forms of scientific infrastructure, including but not limited to the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), LongTerm Ecological Research (LTER) Environmental Data Initiative (EDI), and Integrated Digitized Biocollections (iDigBio). NIH / Across Several Institutes (including NIMH, NIDA, and NINDS) Program: BRAIN Initiative: Research on the Ethical Implications of Advancements in Neurotechnology and Brain Science (R01) NOFO #: RFA-MH-25-170 Synopsis: Supports efforts addressing core ethical issues associated with research focused on the human brain and resulting from emerging technologies and advancements in research and development supported by the BRAIN Initiative. The goal is that efforts supported under this initiative will be both complementary and integrative with the transformative, breakthrough neuroscience discoveries supported through the BRAIN Initiative. This initiative also addresses one of the defined themes in the BRAIN 2025 report: “Considers ethical implications of neuroscience research. Examples of broad areas for consideration include (partial) - Assess the development and use of innovative animal and neural-circuit model systems; - Establish guidelines for the neuroscience data ecosystem that address data capture, storage, sharing, and translation to humans and society - Initiate conversations and collaborations to address neuroscience applications beyond biomedical and clinical contexts. Award details: Maximum award is $300,000 in direct costs in any project year and needs to reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. The maximum project period is 4 years.
