Dear Vanderbilt families,

Congratulations on your student’s remarkable achievement. I am delighted to welcome you to the Commodore family!

As vice provost for undergraduate education, I work closely with our four undergraduate schools and colleges to oversee the educational experience for all students. I am also fortunate to lead initiatives that connect learning inside and outside the classroom, including two cornerstones of a Vanderbilt education: residential colleges and Immersion Vanderbilt.

First-Year Housing

The deadline to submit a housing application is June 1. First-year students are permitted to submit roommate requests. Each student in the pair must request the other for the request to be considered. The deadline to submit roommate requests is June 15.

Students will receive room assignments in early August. Room measurements and walkthrough videos can be helpful when you start buying furniture and décor. Measurements provided represent the range of room sizes on The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons. We recommend that students wait until after Move-In to obtain items where exact room dimensions are required.

Renters insurance is required, as noted in the Housing Contract. Insurance may be provided by a standalone renters insurance policy or by endorsement or extension from a homeowners insurance policy.

Course Registration

Students should receive course registration information this month. First-year course registration is staggered, so not all students register at the same time. Students will connect with their academic adviser before gaining access to register for classes. Adviser assignments are posted in each student’s YES portal.

If students have questions about AP credits or course placement, policies are outlined online.

Past Parent Ambassador Council Chairs Roseann and Jeff Gapusan shared great information about academic advising and registration in their December 2023 Parent Perspectives column. Check it out to learn more about ways to support your student through registration and what to do if your student has questions or concerns. Students can also connect directly with a current VU student about specific majors or schools by visiting the website
