We know you have lots to keep track of as a Hopkins student, and The Word from the Bird is here to help! Each edition compiles important deadlines, announcements, and other need-to-know information, along with helpful reminders and updates about resources, services, programs, and more.

News you need to know 

Upcoming academic deadlines

For full term:

  • March 3 at 4:30 p.m.: Last day to add Customized Academic Learning (CAL) and last day to drop online

For Term 1:

  • February 21 at 4:30 p.m.: Last day to withdraw with a "W" on your transcript, and last day to change enrollment grading system to or from Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory

Summer 2025 Registration:

  • March 4 at 7 a.m.: Registration for the summer term opens

Reminder about phishing scams
Recently, members of the Johns Hopkins community were targeted in an email phishing attack. Recipients of the emails were encouraged to click a link directing them to a fraudulent site and request form. Remember that Johns Hopkins will never send you an email or text message asking you to follow links to "verify" information about yourself. Visit phishing.jh.edu to learn more about how to protect yourself from phishing scams and report suspicious messages.

Celebrating Black History Month

The university continues to celebrate Black History Month with several events taking place through the end of the month. All are welcome!

  • Join Hopkins Dining for their Taste of the Diaspora event on Thursday, Feb. 27 from 5–8 p.m. at Hopkins Café.

  • The JHU Black Heritage Celebration: Threads of Identity will highlight the visual art practices in the African diaspora, including painting, sculpting, and fashion, and how they have influenced the evolution of fine arts. The showcase, to be held on Friday, Feb. 28 in the Glass Pavilion, will include spoken word, monologue, live performance art by kolpeace, scholarship awards, and an expo of local Black artists and designers.

Construction Corner 🚧

For the latest updates on construction projects and active alerts affecting Homewood campus, visit the Facilities & Real Estate website.

  • Plans were recently shared for a new campus residence hall and dining facility to replace AMR 1 and Hopkins Café. Construction activity is expected to start in the summer of 2026, and the project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2028. You can read the announcement in the Hub.

Did you know that Academic Support offers a library of free downloadable study aids? Their collection includes schedule templates to plan your week or semester, a task prioritization tool, a guide to managing your email inbox, time management tips, and much more. JHU launches a new wayfinding app for Homewood campus
Finding your way around Homewood campus just became easier thanks to the newly launched JHU wayfinding app! Designed to address a wide range of accessibility and navigation needs, the app offers precise, real-time, turn-by-turn (voice and text) navigation and "Blue Dot" technology to guide you from your current locations to any campus destination. The app includes ADA-compliant pathways, accessible entrances, and various navigation modalities. Learn more and download the app.

Nomination now open for 2025 Supervisor of the Year
Are you a student worker with a great supervisor? Submit a nomination for Supervisor of the Year! Nominees and their nominators will be invited to an exclusive reception where the winner will be announced. Submit your nomination by March 1.

Dining options during Ramadan
Daily suhoor bags are available to order via Transact; pickup will take place at Charles Street Market. You may use meal swipes, Dining Dollars, or cash/credit. Weekly iftars will be hosted by the JHU Muslim Association (JHUMA) at Hopkins Café Sunday through Tuesday; Wednesday through Saturday, iftars will be held at the Colonnade. Registration is required and will open each week of Ramadan on Hopkins Groups. Stay up to date by joining JHUMA's GroupMe or following them on Instagram.

 

Health & Well-Being

De-stress with Off-Campus Housing
Visit the Off-Campus Housing office on Tuesday, March 4, to learn how to manage stress and anxiety. They will provide a free succulent and you can paint the pot—all while learning how to better manage stress and anxiety through a discussion led by a member of the Behavioral Health Crisis Support Team. RSVP in Hopkins Groups.

 

Student Engagement & Community

Share your Hopkins experience with prospective Blue Jays
Heading home for spring break? Share your Hopkins experience with future Blue Jays through the Hometown Visit Program, in collaboration with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions! Visit your high school, chat with prospective students, and give them an inside look at what life feels like at Hopkins. Complete the interest form to learn more.

Apply to become a First-Year Mentor
Applications to become a First-Year Mentor are now open for returning FYMs, and will open on Feb. 23 for new candidates via SMILE. FYMs provide peer-to-peer support to ensure the successful transition of all new students into the Homewood community. This is an excellent student leadership opportunity available to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Visit the Orientation and First-Year Experience website to learn more about the role FYMs play in welcoming new Blue Jays to our community.

Watch A Different World with the CSC
Join the Center for Social Concern on Thursday, Feb. 27 for a Throwback Thursday screening of an episode of the 1990s sitcom A Different World that focuses on divestment from apartheid in South Africa. Come dressed in your best 90s throwback outfits-prizes will be awarded for the best dressed!

As the spring semester continues, we'd like to share some resources available to support you:

  • The Office of Academic Support offers programs to improve study skills, provide subject-specific tutoring, and encourage peer to peer collaborative learning.
  • Student Outreach & Support is available for appointments by calling 410-516-7857 or by scheduling online. Visit their website to learn more about their services, as well as the Hopkins Food Pantry and other needs resources. 
  • Need mental health support? Visit Mental Health Services to find out how to schedule a therapy appointment or access virtual tools like TimelyCare, SilverCloud, and the Calm app.  
  • Religious and Spiritual Life supports the JHU community’s spiritual needs and promotes religious tolerance and social awareness. Contact them by phone at 410-516-1880 or by email at chaplain@jhu.edu for more information.
