Medical Education Conference at Larner Celebrates Diversity in Medicine |
More than 100 medical and pre-medical students from throughout New England gathered at the Larner College of Medicine November 10–11 for the Regional Medical Education Conference, hosted by UVM’s Student National Medical Association. Participants explored aligning research with their identities, responding to microaggressions in the medical workforce, and the experiences of people of color practicing health care in a predominantly white area.

Vito Imbasciani, M.D.’85, Ph.D., and George DiSalvo created at Larner the first endowed lectureship in the United States focused on preparing culturally competent physicians to provide medical care and prevention services specific to LGBTQ+ populations. We sat down recently with Dr. Imbasciani to reflect on his fascinating life and career.

| Culinary Medicine for Healing |
Culinary medicine pairs the economic, social, and cultural aspects of food with nutrition science to act in tandem with medical interventions in disease prevention. Sarah Krumholz ’26 and Molly Hurd ’26 have developed a student-led culinary medicine course that teaches first-year medical students about lifestyle interventions for chronic disease.

A recent study by Benjamin Littenberg, M.D., and Constance van Eeghen, Dr.P.H., in collaboration with colleagues across the U.S., explores integrative behavioral health (IBH) interventions to address the intertwined challenges of mental and physical health. IBH interventions do show benefits; however, systemic challenges in the health care landscape hinder widespread adoption, underscoring the need for a unified and effective patient care approach.

Anika Advant ’26 presented a public health research project on “Professional Educators’ Perceptions of Active Shooter Drills” during a poster session at the American Public Health Association (APHA) 2023 Annual Meeting & Expo, held November 12–15 in Atlanta, Georgia.

In scientific research, microscopy is a key tool. However, the absence of standardized guidelines for publishing images and image analyses can cause confusion among researchers. In a recent Nature Methods paper, Director of the Microscopy Imaging Center Doug Taatjes, Ph.D., together with colleagues from an international consortium, proposed a set of standardized community-developed checklists to assist researchers, reviewers, and others with the goal of increasing the clarity and reproducibility of image figures and their analyses.

The Office of Medical Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Hunt, M.D.’08, as assistant director of the learning environment at the Larner College of Medicine. A pediatric nephrologist and assistant professor of pediatrics who has served as the medical director for pediatric nephrology since 2016, Dr. Hunt will work closely with the director of the learning environment, Nathalie Feldman, M.D.

Stephen Leffler, M.D.’90, M.H.C.D.S., FACEP, professor of emergency medicine and president and chief operating officer of the UVM Medical Center, was named among the “101 Academic Medical Center CEOs to Know” for 2023 by Becker’s Hospital Review. “[These] executives … are trailblazers … Their leadership results in groundbreaking research discoveries, innovative clinical trials, and superior patient experiences,” Becker’s stated.
