A message from Texas PTA President and Executive Director |
Good evening Lauren,
We need you to use your thunderous voice once more!
The Texas House Select Committee on Education Opportunity and Enrichment will meet tomorrow, Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. to begin hearings on House Bill 1 (HB1). As filed, HB 1 does not address the needs of students and teachers in public schools. What it does accomplish is to divert nearly unlimited public tax dollars to homeschools and exclusive private schools through Education Savings Accounts (AKA vouchers).
If passed, HB1 has the potential to completely upend public education and our communities with no guarantee that Texas children will be properly educated.
Now is the time to take action!

Vouchers hurt children! Until you have adequately funded children and teachers in public schools, there is no room for ESAs or Vouchers. I believe nothing is more fundamental to making every child’s potential a reality than strong public schools. I support policies and policymakers who ensure all children have access to high-quality, adequately funded, and appropriately regulated public schools.

Add how vouchers and inadequate funding will impact your campus, district, and community. Will schools close, student-teacher ratios increase, or programs be cut?

If you have more time, please email, call, or post (tweet) your message to the Select Committee. Find the committee member names, emails, phone numbers, and X profiles here.

Governor Abbott called Texas Legislators back for a fourth Special Session yesterday. Once again, his proclamation prioritizes the establishment of an education savings account program (AKA vouchers). This time, however, his proclamation also acknowledges some of the critical issues plaguing children and families served by public schools. The Governor's previous attempts to pass vouchers failed to gain momentum, in large part, because he refused to also consider the teacher shortage crisis or the inadequate funding of the constitutionally required education of 5.4 million Texas school children.
Texas PTA believes nothing is more fundamental to making every child’s potential a reality than strong public schools. We will continue to monitor bills related to our legislative priorities.
