Lights, Camera, Match Day!

On March 21 at 12 noon, the National Resident Matching Program revealed its results to more than 47,000 graduating medical students nationwide. At the Larner College of Medicine, members of the Class of 2025, including Dennis Dea (shown above) —many wearing glamorous Hollywood garments in keeping with this year’s theme, “Lights, Camera, Match!”—celebrated with family and friends as they learned where they will begin their residencies.

Promising Pediatric Oncology Trial

Pediatric oncology leverages clinical trials to help cancer’s most vulnerable patients. A recent trial at the UVM Cancer Center and UVM Children’s Hospital overseen by Associate Director for Clinical and Translational Research Jessica Heath, M.D., found that chemotherapy paired with an immunotherapy treatment improved outcomes for children with standard-risk B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Cushman Receives Mentoring Award

Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., received the 2025 EPI Mentoring Award from the American Heart Association Council on Epidemiology and Prevention. This prestigious award honors a person who has provided exceptional mentoring and advocacy for early-career investigators. To date, Cushman has served as primary mentor to 35 individuals participating in cardiovascular epidemiology research.

ACCOLADES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

On March 27, the 55th Annual Surgery Senior Major Scientific Program showcased the scholarly work of Larner College of Medicine students from the Class of 2025 who will be specializing in surgery following their graduation in May. Chellie Nayar, Annabelle Feist, and Elizabeth O’Neill were recognized for their outstanding scientific projects and received Senior Surgery Major Awards.

Anne Brisson Morris, M.D., associate professor of family medicine, has been appointed associate dean for primary care at the Larner College of Medicine, succeeding Charles MacLean, M.D. Morris will assume her new leadership role on May 1, 2025. Morris joined the Larner faculty in 2014 and currently serves as residency program director in the Department of Family Medicine.

Inspired by the warmer weather and looming exams, Class of 2028 medical student leaders of the American Medical Women’s Association and the Art Together SIG at the Larner College of Medicine—Madi Cohen, Kripa Harper, Sabrina Herzberg, Clara Loftis, and Ashley Sharma—spearheaded Kindness in Bloom in March to facilitate the spread of thoughtful and motivational notes among their fellow medical students.

For Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, the University of Vermont’s Across the Fence program featured UVM Cancer Center Director Randall Holcombe, M.D., M.B.A., Larner professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology. The interview, which covered risk factors, treatments, and prevention—especially early detection through colonoscopy screenings—aired on April 1.

For national Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Awareness Month, the March 17 episode of the University of Vermont’s Across the Fence program featured UVM Medical Center hematologist Karlyn Martin, M.D., M.S., associate professor of medicine at the Larner College of Medicine. Martin discussed DVT, its risk factors, symptoms, preventive measures, and treatments.
