KU Design Symposium Lecture Series: Brad Woodard | Designer

Brad Woodard is a graphic designer and illustrator originally from the Great Northwest, now residing in Boise, Idaho, with his wife and two children. Brad began his career as an information designer and illustrator at Column Five Media. His expertise in digital illustration has attracted a diverse range of clients, leading to work in advertising at Arnold Worldwide. Brad and his wife now run their own design and illustration studio, Brave the Woods, and have founded Artists for Education, an initiative that brings artists together to create educational artwork for classrooms and homes.

Artmaking Across Generations: Family Ties in the Spencer Collection

How are you influenced by the artistic traditions of your family? Maybe a relative taught you how to knit, paint, build furniture, or garden. Join Collections Manager Angela Watts to learn about the generational influences displayed in pottery by the Nampeyo family, as well as other family ties in our collection. Then, draw on your own family influences for an art-making activity. All ages welcome!

LaunchKU – Fundraising for Student Groups 

LaunchKU is a crowdfunding initiative that helps KU students, faculty and staff raise funds for programs that are the most meaningful to them. Crowdfunding is a great way for donors to provide direct support to students and programs – and encourage others to contribute, as well! In the last year, LaunchKU has helped fund student-led projects for Jayhawk Motorsports, KU Club Tennis and The Big Event.

Architecture Shop Assistant

We created the SmithGroup Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (J.E.D.I.) Scholarship Program to create a more diverse and inclusive design industry by providing students with opportunities to pursue their academic and professional goals. 

Each year, we award five scholarships to students demonstrating a commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in the design industry. The scholarship includes a one-time award of $6,000 to offset the recipient’s tuition at their current academic institution. Additionally, scholarship recipients serve as paid summer interns at SmithGroup offices across the United States (internship is a program requirement).
