Top Five Things to Know

From the Office of Provost Peggy Agouris

OFFICE OF THE PROVOST
WEEKLY MESSAGE ARCHIVE

Dear colleagues,

I hope the update Senior Vice President Ginger Ambler and I shared last week provided helpful context and resources for navigating recent federal initiatives. The university will continue to add resources as new information becomes available, and we hope you find them useful as a source of guidance.

Here are the top “5 Things to Know” this week:

  1. Let’s start with some outstanding news: W&M has been designated an “R1” research institution by the Carnegie Classification system. This classification is a direct reflection of your stellar scholarship. It further elevates the university’s research profile, allowing for expanded publication and grant opportunities. Alongside W&M’s longstanding commitment to excellence in teaching, this ascension to R1 status confirms the strength and impact of our research.

  2. Nominations for International Student Achievement Awards are open through February 20th. The awards are for both graduate and undergraduate students who are exemplary in service, academics, and leadership.

  3. As I shared with you earlier today, Pamela Eddy will retire from W&M at the end of the semester. We thank her for her innumerable contributions and congratulate her on this exciting new chapter. The Office of the Provost has now launched an internal search for the next Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs and Development. Those interested should now apply. Please feel free to reach out with any questions about the process.

  4. Next week, the William & Mary community will come together for W&M Professional Development Week 2025. Professional Development Week is free and open to all W&M alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, and friends. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity for inspiration and connection.

  5. Today, W&M is celebrating National Random Acts of Kindness Day. Thank you to the Office of Health Promotion for spearheading the initiative to record 100,000 acts of kindness, and thank you to all of you for your own kindness and for recognizing it in others!

I know that many of you, like me, really enjoyed being at the basketball game on Saturday and cheering on our men’s team in their victory against Drexel. It was also great to see so many students enjoying the game. Moments like these highlight the strong spirit and connection that make William & Mary special. Go Tribe!
