File Back Up + File Management for Design Students |
External Hard Drive Back Up’s
You can use a physical hard drive to back up your work. I would advise against always carrying it around with you as it will wear out faster.
You can always set up Time Machine on back to make automated back ups on your external hard drive.
| Automated Cloud Back Up Software
These software and subscription services work in the background to back up your machine to a cloud server. You won't notice it. These services are mostly for emergencies (Computer lost, stolen, dies, etc). They are not for everyday back ups. Check out these resources:
Backblaze + Carbonite
Day to Day Cloud Services
Dropbox + Google Drive
These services for work best for day to day back ups as well as accessing files you need in the cloud. These services also allow you to move files off of your hard drive and free up space which works great for projects you need to archive for later or things like that.
Losing your files and not having things backed up is not an excuse for not turning in your work.

Beautiful Users: Designing for People by: Ellen Lupton
In the mid-20th century, Henry Dreyfuss—widely considered the father of industrial design—pioneered a user-centered approach to design that focuses on studying people’s behaviors and attitudes as a key first step in developing successful products. In the intervening years, user-centered design has expanded to undertake the needs of differently abled users and global populations as well as the design of complex systems and services. Beautiful Users explores the changing relationship between designers and users and considers a range of design methodologies and practices, from user research to hacking, open source, and maker culture.
You can download and view a PDF of the book here; It is also currently on display up in the Hatch. The Hatch Reading Room is here for you to de-stress, work on projects, take a reading break, and enjoy a quiet view of campus. Plenty of open tables, comfortable chairs, and of course, books, are waiting for you up on the 4th floor of Marvin from 9-5 Monday - Friday. 📚
