Dr. Jeffrey Gordon co-authors study on gut bacteria and brain |
|
|
Jeffrey Gordon, MD, Dr. Robert J. Glaser Distinguished University Professor of Pathology & Immunology, Developmental Biology and Molecular Microbiology, co-authored a study published recently in Science. The study, "ApoE isoform- and microbiota-dependent progression of neurodegeneration in a mouse model of tauopathy," found that gut bacteria--partly by producing compounds such as short chain fatty acids--affect the behavior of immune cells throughout the body, including ones in the brain that can damage brain tissue and exacerbate neurodegeneration in conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
