Mocktails and Mingle: First-Gen

Join us for an evening of appetizers, mocktails, and engaging conversations. This informal networking event, taking place immediately after the I Am First Too Poster Reveal, is the perfect opportunity to connect with First Generation working professionals and KU alumni from diverse sectors of industry. Join us to hear about their journeys from the classroom to their current careers and positions of influence.  

 At this event, you will have the opportunity to:

Kenneth Spencer Lecture: An Evening with Margaret Renkl, author, non-fiction writer, in Conversation with Megan Kaminski

Margaret Renkl is the author of The Comfort of Crows: A Backyard Year, which won the 2024 Southern Book Prize and was Reese’s Book Club’s 100th pick. Megan Kaminski is a poet and professor of Environmental Studies at the University of Kansas, where her teaching and research work at the intersection of poetic practice, environmental advocacy, and community care. This event will feature a conversation between Margaret and Megan, followed by a book signing, hosted by the Raven Book Store.

ArcD Annual Mock Interview Night

KU School of Architecture & Design will host the 12th annual mock interview night for architecture / interior architecture students. This event is designed to get you ready for the career fair in February. This is a great opportunity to practice interviewing and receive feedback from professionals in a low pressure, fun environment. Network with over 40 professionals representing firms from coast to coast. Only open to current KU architecture and interior architecture students.

KU Design Professional Lecture Series: Wesley Bedrosian

Wesley Bedrosian  is an illustrator and art director whose editorial illustrations have appeared in numerous publications, including The Boston Globe, The Hollywood Reporter, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Scientific American, Vanity Fair and The Wall Street Journal. He has taught and lectured at Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute and The School of Visual Arts.

SOM Foundation 2025 Robert L. Wesley Award 

The Robert L. Wesley Award supports BIPOC undergraduate students enrolled in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, or engineering programs in the United States. This year, three students will receive a $10,000 award in addition to a yearlong mentorship program that connects the students with leading BIPOC practitioners and educators.

SOM Foundation 2025 Research Prize 

Two $30,000 prizes will be awarded to faculty-led interdisciplinary teams based in the United States to conduct original research that contributes to this year’s topic, “Exploring the Potential of Mobility Corridors.”

Hart Howerton Travel Fellowship 

Named by Architectural Digest as “one of the Fellowship programs paving the way for the future of architecture,” the Hart Howerton Fellowship is open to undergraduate and graduate students in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design who will be entering their final year of study. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Fellowship, celebrating two decades of supporting future design leaders. Fellows have the opportunity to pursue independent travel and research on a topic of their choice alongside a summer internship in Hart Howerton’s New York or San Francisco office.

🖼️ Transformations: From Art School to Art World | Edgar Heap of Birds Family Gallery

Through November 8

This multigenerational exhibition celebrates the artistic legacy of J. Theo Johnson (1902–1963), Ted Johnson (1936–2024), and Stephen T. Johnson (1964–), whose works span a century of creative exploration—from academic study to professional practice. "Transformations" presents paintings, drawings, and sculpture that reveal enduring family traditions of artistry, education, mentorship, and imagination.

 

🌾 As Grass Grows – Ten Years at Prairieside Outpost | Leedy-Voulkos Art Center

Through November 21

As Grass Grows: Ten Years at Prairieside Outpost is a group exhibition commemorating the first ten years of the Artist-in-Residence program at Prairieside Outpost in Matfield Green, Kansas. The exhibition features 28 visual artists and writers from across North America, including Photography professor Lilly McElroy. Each artist featured has worked on their creative endeavors in the remote and head-clearing expanse that is the Kansas Flint Hills.

 

🌊 Soundings: Making Culture at Sea | Spencer Museum 

Through December 14

Soundings: Making Culture at Sea explores how visual representations of oceans from different times and places across history have helped humans articulate questions and concerns that are political, cultural, and environmental.

 

➿ My Mother's Tongue Ties Me Together | Spencer Museum 

Through January 4

The Spencer Museum of Art is honored to host the Charlotte Street Visual Artist Awards exhibition for the first time featuring the selected artists for 2025: Noelle Choy, Hùng Lê, and Merry Sun. All three artists explore themes of cultural mythmaking, memory, and migration through a range of media.

📸 Vitamin Ph: New Perspectives in Photography

Photography continues to be a central part of international artistic practice. Over the past ten years it has experienced radical changes, in part due to the rise of digital technologies. Photography is now often engaged in by artists who are not just printing in a darkroom, but using the medium as a single aspect of a larger ouvre, as one of several media under exploration. Vitamin Ph focuses on diverse global developments in 'art' photography through the work of 121 contemporary artists, who were nominated by 78 international critics, curators and artists. 

The Hatch Reading Room, on the 4th floor of Marvin Hall, is here for you to de-stress, work on projects, take a break to read, and enjoy a quiet view of campus.
