BNIM 2030 Commitment – 2024 Impact!
|
This year, BNIM is proud to report an 86% reduction in predicted energy use intensity (pEUI) from the 2003 energy baseline across more than 5 million square feet of designed space we touched in 2024.
This milestone is the result of sustained commitment, lessons learned, collaborative design innovation, and a shared vision with our clients for what buildings can—and should—be. But we are not stopping at incremental reduction; from this point forward, we treat net zero energy performance as our starting point, not the aspirational goal.
The design decisions we make today shape decades of performance and impact. Every project, when designed with intention, can be part of the solution. Together, we can create regenerative, resilient, and net-positive environments—and lead the built environment toward a livable, thriving future.

The Tom and Ruth Harkin Center becomes the second building in the U.S. to achieve Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification Gold Rating
|
The Tom and Ruth Harkin Center at Drake University is the second building in the U.S. to achieve Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification (RHFAC) Gold Rating. RHFAC measures and certifies the level of meaningful access of buildings and sites beyond building code and is based upon the holistic user experience of people with varying disabilities.
The Harkin Institute and the Rick Hansen Foundation have recently committed to collaborating together in the U.S. to work toward a shared goal of a society in which people with disabilities can participate fully in the places people live, work, learn, and play.
The Tom and Ruth Harkin Center on the Drake University campus in Des Moines, Iowa, is home for The Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement. The building demonstrates a gracious spirit of place as a model of innovation for inclusive, accessible workplaces.
As a recent 2024 AIA COTE Top Ten Award Recipient, the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center is establishing a new definition of sustainable design by not only embodying energy and environmental responsibility, but also equity and inclusive design principles for people. This Human Purposed Integrated Design methodology employed by BNIM and embraced by the Harkin Institute elevates care for people and the planet.
