Gary An Invested as Green and Gold Professor |
In a formal ceremony held July 29 at the University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine, Professor of Surgery and Vice Chair of Surgical Research Gary An, M.D., was invested as the inaugural holder of the Department of Surgery’s Green and Gold Professorship of Trauma and Critical Care. Appointment to an endowed position is among the highest academic honors UVM can bestow on a faculty member.

| ’24 Juckett Summer Fellows |
Larner medical student Greta Joos ’27 and second-year cellular, molecular, and biomedical sciences graduate student Maggie Trout have been selected by the University of Vermont Cancer Center for the prestigious Juckett Summer Fellowship. Joos is studying the impact of social determinants of health on access, and Trout is investigating combinatorial drug therapy in diffuse midline glioma.

Nataniel Lester-Coll, M.D., associate professor of radiation oncology, has been appointed division chief of radiation oncology at the Larner College of Medicine and chair of radiation oncology at the UVM Health Network. He leads a prominent department of cancer care professionals, contributing to the UVM Cancer Center’s goal of achieving National Cancer Institute designation.

| New Medical Director Named |
The University of Vermont Cancer Center and the UVM Health Network recently announced the appointment of Chris Holmes, M.D., Ph.D., as medical director for cancer clinical programs. Holmes, a professor of medicine at UVM’s Larner College of Medicine, is currently deputy division chief for hematology/oncology at the University of Vermont Cancer Center.

The Larner College of Medicine was recently recognized for excellence in both primary care and research in the 2024 U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings. “Placement in the top tiers for both categories acknowledges our commitment to medical education that provides a balance between excellence in primary care and excellence in research,” said Larner dean Richard L. Page, M.D.

The U.S. Public Health Service Physician Professional Advisory Committee selected eight Class of 2026 medical students at the Larner College of Medicine—Anika Advant, Connor Barton, Jackson Bressor, Caity DeCara, Akhil George, Briana Leger, Khadija Moussadek, and Regan Staudenraus—to receive a 2024 Excellence in Public Health Award. The students were recognized during a virtual award ceremony on July 24.

Assistant Professor of Medicine Sherrie Khadanga, M.D., has been awarded her first R01 grant, from the National Institute on Aging for “Optimizing Aerobic Fitness and Functional Response to Exercise in Older Adults.” The project aims to combine high-intensity interval training and high-intensity resistance training to improve peak oxygen uptake and physical function in older patients needing cardiac rehabilitation.

A collaborative research team co-led by investigators David Jangraw, Ph.D., M.S., and Denise Peters, Ph.D., D.P.T., PT, has been awarded the 2024 Armin Grams Memorial Research Award by the Center on Aging. The project will assess in-home instruments designed to measure mobility, activities of daily living, and speech production in aging rural Vermonters with and without mild cognitive impairment.

Endocrinologist Jennifer Kelly, D.O., professor of medicine, was recently appointed as the new chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the University of Vermont Health Network. Nationally known for her work in bone health and recognized as an exceptional continuous medical education educator, Kelly had served as interim division chief since 2022.
