We hope you are enjoying your summer as much as we are, though we miss your students and are excited to soon welcome them back to campus. However, we’d recommend checking the MSU construction and East Lansing construction websites prior to planning your trip to campus. There are quite a few orange barrels in the area!
Speaking of welcoming students back, we’re also excited to welcome you! A hearty "Go Green!" (and a response of "Go White!") to our incoming Spartan families. We’re happy you’re here and are looking forward to supporting you during your student’s time at MSU. Keep reading for ways to connect with us!
We have some new ways to keep campus near to you while at home. The infamous and handy squirrel calendar is available to purchase online or in the MSU Union and 1855 Place Spartan Spirit Shops, to help you plan for important campus events and due dates. You may also find yourself in need of some comfort after your Spartan heads to East Lansing. We have you covered with a unique, limited edition care kit, which includes specialty items only available in this box: a super soft Spartan tartan blanket, tumbler, postcards to send your Spartan, and more! Proceeds from the sale of the calendar and care kits are used to fund family programming and events. If interested in providing support without purchasing items, we also accept donations for events throughout the year.
We hope you will join us at the Move-in Family Meetup Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 19 and 20, from 6-8 p.m. at Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center. We will have light snacks and a cash bar available and welcome you to come celebrate or commiserate with other families who have or will move their student in, on or off campus! Let us know you’re interested in joining by completing this quick form.
The other event we'd like to share is the 2025 MSU Family Weekend Presented by MSUFCU happening Sept. 12-14. Registration opens Monday, July 28, at 8 a.m., on Eventbrite and the event registration is free this year! Some of the add-on events have a fee, but the tailgate is included free of charge (registration is required). Watch for an email with the registration link or find the link on our website along with other helpful information. We do have a limited number of hotel rooms for those who live more than 90 miles away who would otherwise not be able to attend family weekend and a limited number of football game tickets. If this applies to your family, please complete this survey by 11:59 p.m., Friday, July 11, for consideration. Not all who request support will be able to receive it. We will communicate with all who request support by July 18, either way.
We look forward to seeing you this fall. Read below for great fall semester information, watch for the August newsletter, and let us know if we can be of help in the meantime.
Take good care,
Laurin

Spartan Safety Updates
As your student plans their arrival to East Lansing there are two safety tasks they should complete. First, they (and you) should download the SafeMSU app for safety and alert notifications, reporting tips, support resources, CATA Lot Link and Night Owl, and more. Second, all students should update their emergency contact information in their Student Information System (SIS) portal, under the “My Profile” tile. This is the information MSU staff uses in the event a student’s emergency contact is needed, so it is important students regularly check that the information is accurate. Thank you for reminding them of these important safety steps.

New Students: Get Your Spartan Card Early!
The ID Office is now printing Spartan Cards for new students. If they’ve submitted their photo and received an “approved” email, they can pick up their Spartan Card at the ID Office during regular office hours, 8 a.m.-4:45 p.m. through Aug. 15.
To pick up their Spartan Card, their student ID number and a physical government-issued photo ID (like a driver’s license or passport) are required. The student must pick up their Spartan Card themselves. For more information, visit idoffice.msu.edu.
Can’t make it before Aug. 15?
Students with approved photos can also pick up their cards at the STEM Building from Aug. 18-21.
Still need to submit a photo?
They’ve got time! Students should check their inbox for an email from myphoto@idoffice.msu.edu, and reply with their photo by Aug. 8 to avoid long lines. If they don’t have a photo uploaded and approved by Aug. 8, they’ll need to visit the ID Office in the International Center (Room 170) to have a photo taken and card printed — please expect long wait times.
Both ID Office and STEM locations will have extended hours during Fall Welcome.

Help Your Spartan Start Their Campus Job Without Delays
Is your Spartan ready to dive into campus life? With fewer classroom hours than in high school, many students find that a part-time job is the perfect way to build a routine, make new friends and earn some extra spending money.
On-campus jobs are flexible and designed around student schedules. They’re more than just paychecks. They support academic success and help students feel more connected to the Spartan community.
Plan ahead: If your student wants to work on campus, they’ll need to complete a federal I-9 form and that means bringing the right documents to East Lansing.
Only original, unexpired documents are accepted — no photos or copies. A U.S. passport works, or a combination such as a driver’s license and Social Security card. View the full list of accepted documents here.
Pro tip: Pack them now! Tuck the documents into a labeled folder, so they’re ready when your student is.
Browse job openings at jobs.rhs.msu.edu, and remind your Spartan to check their MSU email regularly for hiring updates.

Returning students are scheduled to move in Aug. 20 and 21.

Dining Options During Fall Move-In
Fall student dining plans begin Aug. 18. Combo-X-Change will be available at that time, however, during move-in week, dining plan holders will receive SIX Combo-X-Changes to accommodate the shortened week. On Sunday, Aug. 24, the full 12 weekly Combos will begin.
Additionally, for those students arriving early to campus from Aug. 15-17, only Brody Square, The Edge at Akers and The Vista at Shaw will be open for student diners.

Spartans Take a Stand Against Hazing
In December 2024, the Stop Campus Hazing Act was signed into federal law. This law strengthens how colleges and universities across the country prevent and respond to hazing. It requires institutions to report hazing-related incidents and share information more transparently.
At MSU, hazing is strictly prohibited. Student organizations or individuals found responsible for hazing may face disciplinary action under university policy. In alignment with the Stop Campus Hazing Act, MSU will continue building on its efforts to track incidents, educate the campus community and report findings in accessible ways.
Families play an important role in reinforcing these values. If you’re looking to learn more or want to support your Spartan in navigating these conversations, visit stophazing.msu.edu for resources, reporting options and answers to frequently asked questions.

Financial Aid Update
Your student's 2025-26 financial aid package is now available! They can visit their financial aid portal at student.msu.edu and take action on any items that require attention. The financial aid package is not complete until any outstanding items, such as acceptance of loans or submitting required verification documentation, are finalized. It’s important to make sure students are looking at the AUG 2025-MAY 2026 tab to take action for the upcoming aid year.
