Myaamia students had the opportunity to learn to make pakitahaakana ‘lacrosse sticks’ during a workshop with Doug Peconge, community programming manager for the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. Doug has been refining this process for years and recently traveled to Oxford, Ohio to share his knowledge with Myaamia students.
Students learned the entire process, from trimming and sanding the wood to netting the hoop used to catch the ball. Students who participated were able to complete their own stick. We look forward to seeing the students play with the sticks that they made this spring. Mihši neewe ‘a big thank you’ to Doug, for teaching us this skill!
