We love having your students on campus, so when they’re away (and restaurants are easier to get into) we miss them, and we are ready to welcome them back to East Lansing! We do have some academic, physical and social updates and plans below, so keep reading! For weekly campus updates, like Vennie Gore’s promotion to executive vice president for Administration, be sure to subscribe to MSU Today. We’ll miss Vennie and his impeccable style around 1855 Place but know we’re in excellent hands with Drs. Erin Carter, Genyne Royal and Allyn Shaw while new vice presidents will be sought through national searches.
A variety of exciting and educational opportunities will be offered to the MSU Community in celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and historical events that took place in our nation and on our campus. A calendar of events can be found here. Please note the university will be closed Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of Dr. King’s birthday. Residence halls will remain open and residential dining hours can be found here.
Many students were pleased with the results of their academic efforts during fall semester, while others realized that perhaps some additional skills may help them achieve different results. If you have a Spartan who could learn or brush up on study skills and learning techniques, the Neighborhood Student Success Center (NSSC) has resources available online and, starting later this month, in-person Academic Success Workshops open to all students. Encourage your Spartan to use the resources available to them to make the most of their MSU academic experience!
Wherever your Spartan is and whatever they are doing, remind them to stay safe and healthy for a strong 2025! Wash those hands, Spartans.
Take care,
Laurin

Meal Forms for Ill Students
As a reminder, students who are sick should not pick up their meals in person to help avoid spreading illness to the campus community. Culinary Services has a sick meal pickup arrangement process in place. Any ill student can complete a Sick Meal Pickup Arrangements Form and provide the completed copy (printed or electronic) to the person designated to pick up their meal. The student must complete a separate form for each requested meal period (e.g., breakfast, lunch, dinner). Additionally, students are not allowed to provide their ID card for someone else to pick up their food because meals are nontransferable.
The form is available online at eatatstate.com/FAQs. Dining hall entrance host stands and residence hall service centers also have copies of the form.

Culinary Experiential Dining Events
We are thrilled that so many students have been participating in Culinary Services Experiential Dining Events. These events vary from cooking classes to chef table inspired dinners. Each event is unique according to the chef's expertise and cultural heritage. In fact, spring semester, we'll feature chef tables highlighting Mexican cuisine, Vietnamese food and another focused-on flavors of the Caribbean. Not only will students delve into delicious meals that tell a story of traditions and culture, but they'll also connect with many peers and perhaps even a friend or two! If your student hasn't attended one of these events yet, encourage them to sign up.

2025-26 Housing Sign-Up for Current First-Year Students
Housing sign-up for students entering their second year will be later this spring. The process will begin when housing contracts open in February. We will share plenty of information here, on the Live On website and with your student. To stay up to date, follow us on Instagram at @MSULiveOn!
Housing Exceptions
First-year students may apply for an exception in My Housing to live off campus and be released from the housing requirement. Students who qualify for an exception but want to live on campus do not have to submit an exception. Exceptions are only for required students with a desire to live off campus.
By submitting an exception, your student is requesting to be released from the live-on requirement. If their exception is approved, they will no longer be required to live on campus and may not be able to secure on-campus housing in future years. This action cannot be undone. Please discuss this option with your student before they submit the exception. Learn more at liveon.msu.edu/housing-exceptions.

The State of Spartan Health
Check out the latest and greatest State of Spartan Health data sheets on impediments to academic success, alcohol, emotional wellness, physical health and sexual health. Based on a set of data compiled from the American College of Health Association National College Health Assessment, the survey gauges the health and health behaviors of college students.
Bottom line? MSU students report that stress, anxiety and sleep difficulties are their top three impediments to academic success (n = 931 students), which mirrors what college students across the nation say. Need support? University Health and Wellbeing is here to help!
Check out this video sharing what students have to say about how they care for their well-being.

Reminders from the Office of Financial Aid
If students have not yet filled out the 2025-26 FAFSA, they can do so now at fafsa.gov. Even if you haven't qualified for financial aid in the past, it is always recommended that you complete this simple application to be considered for a number of federal, state and MSU scholarship opportunities. Also, if later in the school year, students find they need to accept federal student loans, having the FAFSA completed makes accepting these loans a simple process. Current students can also still accept scholarships and loans for which they qualify by completing the 2024-25 FAFSA for this school year.

Graduation Notes from the Office of the Registrar
If your student is eligible to apply for graduation for spring semester 2025, now is the time to apply. Graduation applications for summer semester 2025 will open Jan. 13.
Please keep in mind, if your student is applying to graduate and they have FERPA restrictions on their account, their name will not appear in the commencement program. Students can check to see if they have FERPA restrictions before by selecting My Profile in student.msu.edu and clicking FERPA Restrictions in the left navigation, then FERPA Activities View. To remove restrictions, simply uncheck the box. Students need to apply for graduation, and not have the FERPA restriction, by Feb. 28 to be included in the commencement program.
After your Spartan’s degree is conferred, they will receive a confirmation email from the Office of the Registrar. Graduates typically receive their diplomas in the mail 4-6 weeks after the start of the semester for domestic and 6-8 weeks for international addresses.
