Dear Eagle Nation:
This week, Coppin State University will welcome the University System of Maryland Board of Regents to our beautiful campus for their April meeting. This two-day meeting, taking place on April 13 and April 14, will be another opportunity to showcase the brilliant minds, and great successes of our university to the individuals who oversee operations, develop policy, and appoint leaders of the USM, and its 12 universities.
In his recent newsletter, Chancellor Jay Perman, M.D. highlighted the Pathways to Professions (P2P) program which is training diverse, culturally competent educators, while also addressing the shortage of qualified teachers in our schools. Training highly adaptable and capable educators is part of Coppin State University’s DNA, and was the reason our university was founded. I am proud of the recognition we have received around our competitive programs, our innovative faculty, and our outstanding students.
Faculty, staff, students, and administrators from our sister institutions will also be present on campus. I ask that you give them a warm welcome when you see them on campus.
I also want to congratulate the students and organizations recognized during the 2023 Eagles Choice Awards. The celebration was a time to highlight those who are excelling academically, as well as those who were nominated and chosen by their peers, for making major contributions to student life here at Coppin State University.
It was my pleasure to announce Jahi Chapman ('23), an Interdisciplinary Studies major from Baltimore, as the winner of the Coppin Pride Award. Jahi is a former Mister Coppin, a member of our ROTC program, and someone who does not hesitate when given a chance to represent our university with pride and positive energy.
Jahi believes in handing down the traditions that makes our campus and our community strong. In nominations for the award, he was described by other Eagles as an excellent role model, who provides guidance and advice from everything from classes, to work study, and encourages others to get as involved as they can in campus life.
Jahi Chapman ('23)
I encourage all of us to show pride in Coppin State, in all we do: how we perform in the classroom; our participation in events on and off-campus; how we treat our colleagues and classmates; and how we support one another as we come closer to the end of the semester.

Eagles on the Move

Amayah Bell
Presidential Scholar, Amayah Bell (’25), will study abroad at the University of Stirling in Scotland this summer. Amayah will be studying Introduction to Short Story Writing and Science Fiction Literature beginning in June, through the Arcadia University: Summer Through Arcadia Abroad program. Amayah is an English major who was looking for a chance to study creative writing and learn more about Scottish culture.

“I have the opportunity to explore castles, visit major attractions in Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews, and put what I’m learning into a real-world context,” said Amayah. “I am also looking forward to having a taste of education in the United Kingdom, as it is my intention to apply to graduate schools in the U.K. as well as the United States.”
When asked what she hopes to bring back from her studies abroad, Amayah said:
I hope to return with a worldly perspective that I can apply to my academics. The Stirling faculty will teach me new ways of writing creatively, which I could use in Coppin’s creative writing courses. I also hope to get more students interested in studying abroad. I want my experience to encourage Coppin students seize these opportunities while they still have the flexibility to do so.
Amayah says Coppin, and the community she has found here, have given her an undergraduate experience that would have been harder to find at another university.
“The Department of Humanities has provided continued support and encouragement through my endeavors, and the environment fostered on campus is irreplaceable. I’m following in the footsteps of my father, who is a Coppin alum, and I have made strides in defining the path to my future.”
The Baltimore Beat recently highlighted Coppin State University alumna and entrepreneur Dr. Tammira Lucas ('09), and her company, The Cube. The Cube gives mothers piece of mind their children are taken care of, while also providing space to pursue their dreams. She has a unique model that is benefiting generations here in Baltimore. Fellow alumna TeKesha Jamison ('03) is co-owner and Chief Operating Officer.
