Cipolla Honored with Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award

Marilyn J. Cipolla, Ph.D.’97, professor of neurological sciences at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, has received the highly competitive Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorder and Stroke. Dr. Cipolla is the first researcher from Larner and UVM to receive this national honor.

Calling Country Doctors!

Health care recruiting is challenging across the board, but especially in rural settings like Vermont. One strategy to attract new physicians is to reimburse medical school tuition if they commit to practicing medicine in Vermont after they complete their training. Meet Larner’s 2026 medical tuition forgiveness scholarship recipients, the Green Mountain State’s newest future doctors.

Argosy Foundation Gift

The Argosy Foundation has made a $2 million gift to support research at the Vermont Center for Cardiovascular and Brain Health (VCCBH) at the Larner College of Medicine. The gift will advance a major research initiative led by VCCBH Co-Director Mary Cushman, M.D.’89, M.Sc., aimed at improving the prevention of stroke and heart attack in people living with atrial fibrillation.

Larner Faculty Named President of ACP

Jan K. Carney, M.D., M.P.H. (pictured, right), associate dean for public health and health policy, professor of medicine, and chief of public health at the Larner College of Medicine, began her tenure as president of the American College of Physicians (ACP) upon the conclusion of their annual Internal Medicine Meeting on April 18, 2026. ACP is the largest medical specialty organization in the United States.

ACCOLADES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The UVM Cancer Center celebrates the Jerome W. Yates, M.D., M.P.H. (pictured, right), Rural Cancer Outreach Fundto advance cancer care and research in rural communities. Backed by a major investment from the J. Walter Juckett Cancer Research Foundation, the fund honors Dr. Yates’s vision of innovation and collaboration and his commitment to ensuring equitable access to high-quality care.

A contingent from Larner that included (pictured, left to right) Rebecca Bell, M.D., Eunice Suberu ’27, Rep. Balint (D-Vt.), Julie Ehrlich, M.D., M.P.H., and Heidi Schumacher, M.D., attended the American Academy of Pediatrics Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C., in April. They met with members of Vermont’s congressional delegation and spoke up for the Strengthening the Vaccines for Children Act.

Yvonne Janssen-Heininger, Ph.D., University Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, vice chair for research, and co-leader of the Cancer Cell Research Program at the UVM Cancer Center, recently delivered an invited seminar at Yale University on protein oxidation and fibrosis. The visit fostered meaningful conversations and new opportunities for collaboration.

Larner Associate Professor of Pediatrics Deirdre O’Reilly, M.D., M.P.H. (pictured, bottom left), represented Vermont at the March of Dimes Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. She joined a rural-state team to meet with congressional staff and advocate for maternal and infant health programs. Discussions focused on key funding priorities, including the PREEMIE Act and NIH-supported research.

In mid-April, Mary Cushman, M.D.’89, M.Sc., attended and spoke at the 2026 British Society for Haematology conference in Liverpool, England. Dr. Cushman delivered the MacFarlane Biggs Plenary Lecture on health outcomes in atrial fibrillation (AFib), highlighting insights from the REGARDS study. The talk emphasized the importance of cross-system care in treating patients with AFib.

The Larner College of Medicine ceremony celebrates the completion of medical student training with graduates receiving their doctoral hoods and diplomas as they cross the stage. Reception to follow in the Grand Maple Ballroom at the Davis Center. The ceremony will be live-streamed and recorded.

Memorial Day | All UVM offices will be closed and there will be no academic activities on Monday, May 25, for this federal holiday dedicated to honoring those who died while serving in the U.S. military.
