Interview Season and Absences |
Best of luck to all those who are interviewing during this season! As soon as you are aware of an interview date, submit an absence request here if you’re in a course at the time. If you miss more than 2 days in a course, make sure to discuss a make-up plan with your course director. If you are expecting to miss more than 3 days during a course, consider using a FLEX month.

Kurt Smith, MD, is one of the course directors for the How Doctors Think ISC and an Acute Care MCT. Dr. Smith loves seeing medicine through the eyes of students; the questioning and experiencing everything for the first time brings back his wonder for medicine and his joy for profession.

Dr. Smith chose Emergency Medicine "because [he] couldn't make up [his] mind." He loves every part of medicine and with EM, he has to know it all. The process of taking a set of undifferentiated symptoms, figuring out what is going on and how to treat it, and delivering treatment is what Dr. Smith thrives on. He also loves that teamwork is vital in the ED and thinks it’s a phenomenal experience being surrounded by knowledgeable nurses, paramedics, and techs all working together for the care of patients.
Dr. Smith hopes to see you in the How Doctors Think ISC, where you'll learn things such as how to apply clinical reasoning to diagnostic testing, therapeutic interventions, and also the identification and avoidance of cognitive biases. You may also interface Dr. Smith for your Acute Care MCT session during your first acute care course!
