The Science of Museums: Design innovations at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
|
With a long history of involvement in the Arts, BNIM has partnered with our clients to help enhance arts access and experiences for their communities through cohesive, compelling, community-centered, immersive environments, from local galleries to nationally recognized museums and centers for the visual arts.
Through this work, we have studied, researched, and developed a strong knowledge base in the science of museums and the key technical considerations that support the delivery of a beautiful and engaging arts destination.
Beginning our Science of Museums series, Hans Nettelblad, BNIM Principal, shares lessons and design innovations from BNIM's two decades of collaboration with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art — a Kansas City treasure that has held a significant cultural arts presence in its community since 1933.

Zhou B Art Center Celebrates Grand Opening in Kansas City
The Zhou B Art Center recently celebrated its grand opening in early June in Kansas City, MO, introducing a dynamic new arts center that establishes an anchor at the east end of Kansas City’s 18th Street Cultural Corridor, linking the Crossroads Arts District to the Historic Jazz District.
The project involved the transformative renovation and stabilization of the nationally-listed historic Crispus Attucks School, a formerly segregated school for African American students in Kansas City in the mid 20th century. BNIM worked with renowned artists ShanZuo and DaHuang Zhou — the Zhou Brothers — to bring new purpose to the building and to reflect on its history and place within the 18th and Vine District.
The Zhou B Art Center provides expansive art galleries, a restored auditorium, and over 40 studios for working artists. The Center aims to be "a vibrant hub where artistic expression flourishes, showcasing a diverse range of artists and exhibitions tailored for individuals of all ages and backgrounds."

Ozark Modern - Architect's Newspaper features Springfield Art Museum
BNIM is working with the Springfield Art Museum on its future renovation and expansion, a transformational project which emphasizes the museum as a beautiful and connective destination for the arts and cultural heritage in the Springfield region. The State of Missouri recently allocated funding to the City of Springfield, including $10M to contribute to the renovation and expansion.
The upcoming project was featured The Architect's Newspaper this June: "In plan, the forthcoming museum by BNIM is rectangular and centered by a lush courtyard. Many of the museum’s artworks will be visible from the street thanks to the facade’s translucency. Its tall rooms will enable grand murals, paintings, and sculptures to abound."
