Laker to Laker: Message from the Provost

Dear Colleagues,

Last week I commented on the ethos of GVSU faculty and staff as deeply caring, passionate about the potential of every Laker, committed to their well-being, and to realization of their potential. This level of care was again on display this past week at the two townhalls we held around the topic of student success. I am very grateful to the more than 100 of you who attended and shared your experiences and insights. We have one more session this week on January 30th at 3:00 PM in the Loosemore Auditorium on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus. Vice Presidents Hall-Jones, Truss, and I hope to see many of you there. After this third session, we plan to reflect on everything we heard and learned and then to communicate back with the GVSU community.

This week, I want to comment on another core facet of our work. What makes us a university; what gives us license for the work that we do; what gives us the credibility amongst our peers; what makes our communities trust us and look up to us: the expertise of our faculty and the scholarly vibrancy of their work. It is this intellectual asset and inquisitive predisposition that give us claim to have a credible voice on things that matter. To borrow Robert Sapolsky’s schematic characterization of the frontal cortex as what “makes you do the harder thing when it’s the right thing to do," higher education institutions are the voices we (should) consult when we are discerning the right thing to do; higher education institutions are the credible intellectual leaders who (should) compel us to do those harder things. Our faculty from all disciplines are very active and prolific scholars. It manifests in many ways. Here in Lakers Ready, we have recently started featuring books authored by our faculty in the current year. I hope you are all enjoying this section and taking the time to read some of these books. Having just completed the review of sabbatical requests for 2025, I cannot be prouder of the richness, thoughtfulness, and timeliness of the scholarly and creative activities of GVSU faculty.

Sixty-seven sabbatical proposals were submitted this year. Sixty-one will receive approval; the others needed additional work or adjustments to their project. Each of the approved proposals represents a significant scholarly endeavor with concrete outcomes in the form of books, refereed articles, software systems, equipment, and artistic creations. Collectively, they ask and dive into some of the most critical questions of importance to our societies and bring to bear the unique tools and perspectives of their discipline to them. At a time when the place and necessity of some disciplines in education is being scrutinized, I could not help but marvel at the richness of the tapestry created because we have each one of these disciplines; I could not help but reflect on the necessity of each of these perspectives in creating thoughtful comprehensive frames for complex human issues; I could not help but imagine how impoverished we would be without any one them. The very essence of GVSU, a university rooted in liberal education is a statement of commitment to a human centered and thoughtful education.

With my best wishes for an intellectually and emotionally rewarding week,

Fatma
