Hunters Lane High School principal Dr. Susan Kessler’s best efforts to control her diabetes weren’t working. The eating recommendations from her doctors resulted in yo-yo dieting, and her prescribed medication didn’t seem to be helping much.
When she learned that her MNPS health plan includes a program aimed at reversing — not just managing — diabetes, she signed on.
The program, Virta, uses medical supervision, health coaching, education, high-end technology and an easy-to-use app. Best of all, it doesn’t cost eligible MNPS employees a penny.

Virta uses a low-carb, keto-based eating plan that includes plenty of fatty foods like sausage, butter and cheese, or, as Sue calls it, “normal food.” She says the diet’s food choices keep her feeling full and satisfied.
Best of all, she’s been able to cut her diabetes and cholesterol medicines in half, while also losing 17 pounds.
If you struggle with diabetes and weight gain, check out Virta. And be sure to check out Dr. Sue's full story to read about an exciting update in her efforts to kick diabetes to the curb.

Love fried foods but not the health consequences of eating greasy, high-cholesterol meals? Say hello to your new BFF: an air fryer. This easy-to-use kitchen appliance works the same way as a convection oven, which circulates hot air to create crispy, fried foods — while using up to 80% less oil. Cooking with an air fryer can reduce your LDL (bad) cholesterol, along with your risk for health problems, like heart attack and stroke.
