OSP & CFGR Office Hours on November 12th
Whether you are just starting to think about external funding, have a specific funder in mind, or are ready to start preparing a proposal, please drop by open office hours to discuss your ideas and requests for support! Elizabeth Richer (Director of Corporate, Foundation & Government Relations), Rebecca Switzer (OSP Faculty Fellow), and Rhonda Newton (Research Development Manager) will hold open office hours on Tuesday, November 12th from 9am-12noon and 1-4pm in the Willard Smith Library in the Vaughan Literature Building.
Have You Applied for An Individual Funding Award? OSP Would Like to Know!
When faculty members work with OSP to apply for and receive external funding awards such as grants, most government agencies and foundations will issue the funds directly to Bucknell on a faculty member's behalf, since the university is an eligible tax-exempt and non-profit organization. That said, some granting agencies will award funds (e.g., fellowships) directly to an individual applicant in certain cases. Knowing where faculty have sought competitive external funding from all sources helps us build our resources and knowledge base to help other faculty.
An easy way to let us know that you are working on or have submitted an individual award proposal is via OSP's Sponsored Project Approval (SPA) form - just check "yes" to the last question on the General Proposal Information page which reads "Is this an Individual Award?" When you click "save," OSP will have a record of your proposal submission. When funder guidelines specify the award is intended for individuals, in most cases, additional review or Bucknell approval of the proposal will not be required.
OSP would like to remind faculty and staff that our team can also support them in their efforts as individual applicants. We are happy to parse solicitation guidelines, proofread applications, and, with sufficient lead time, match you with a peer colleague to review your proposal through our Proposal Reviewer Initiative and Mentoring Exchange (PRIME) service.

Social Sciences
11/29/24 (White Paper, strongly encouraged). Department of Defense Minerva Research Initiative: University Research. This program supports innovative basic research that contributes to the advancement of social science and provides new methods and understanding in six research areas: Social Cohesion and Conflict; Advancing Influence Measurement(s); Arctic at the Polar Crossroads; Cultural Resilience, Climate, and Human Security in Oceania; Social Impact of Technological Change; and Deterrence and Competition across Military and Civilian Spheres. Detailed descriptions of each area are in Appendix B, starting on page 30 of the announcement.
12/4/24. Spencer Foundation: Small Research Grants on Education. This program supports smaller scale or pilot research projects that will contribute to the improvement of education, broadly conceived, with budgets of $50,000 or less. Proposals are encouraged from scholars across a variety of disciplines in an effort to fund field-initiated education research.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics
1/23/25. NSF: Launching Early-Career Academic Pathways in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (LEAPS-MPS). This program supports pre-tenure faculty for projects up to 24 months long with budgets up to $250,000. Potential PIs cannot have been a PI or co-PI on another NSF grant, except for fellowships, equipment grants or Research Opportunity Awards; and must have a doctoral degree in one of the typical disciplines supported by the Directorate. This program has a second goal of broadening participation, which must be addressed in an impact statement.
3/1/25. NSF: Mid-Career Advancement. This program offers an opportunity for those at the Associate Professor rank to substantively enhance and advance their research program through synergistic and mutually beneficial partnerships, typically at an institution other than their home institution (note: the Directorate of Mathematics and Physical Sciences does not participate). The grant budget may include up to 6.5 months of salary for the PI, across the three-year project. NSF strongly encourages contacting a program officer from the appropriate directorate to discuss proposal plans; see a list here. Note: FULL professors at primarily undergraduate institutions may also apply if their research falls under a participating program in the Directorate of Biological Sciences or the Directorate for Geosciences.

Creative and Performing Arts
11/15/24. AAUW: Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship. The AAUW American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship is intended to increase the number of women in tenure-track faculty positions and promote equity for women in higher education. The fellowship is designed to assist scholars in obtaining tenure by spending a year pursuing independent research; tenured faculty are not eligible. The fellowship year runs July 1 to June 30. The Fellowship is open to pre-tenure women scholars in all fields of study; follow the link for additional eligibility criteria.

Engineering
NSF Funding Opportunities by Division/Office in the Directorate for Engineering:
With its 2024 solicitation, the National Science Foundation has broadened the eligibility for its Engineering Research Initiation program. The PI may not have been a PI or Co-PI on any current or prior awarded NSF research grant (including subaward) at the time of proposal submission, but may have received up to $200,000 in funding from any other Federal Agency in the past five calendar years.
1/15/25. NSF: Improving Undergraduate STEM Education. This program supports projects that bring recent advances in STEM knowledge into undergraduate education, to incorporate evidence-based practices into STEM teaching and learning, and lay the groundwork for institutional improvement in STEM education, as well as replicate research studies at different types of institutions and with different student bodies. This deadline is for Institutional and Community Transformation (Capacity-Building and Level 1) proposals and Engaged Student Learning (Level 1) proposals.

Management, Business and Commerce
2/3/25, 9/3/25 (target date). NSF: Science of Organizations. This program funds research that advances the fundamental understanding of how organizations develop, form and operate, using scientific methods and yielding generalizable insights that are of value to the business practitioner, policy-maker and research communities.
Proposals accepted anytime. Society of Actuaries: Emerging Issues Research Pool. The Society of Actuaries Research Institute's Emerging Issues Research supports emerging topics in established practice areas and encourages the development of research projects that have strong impact on the actuarial profession. Applications are accepted throughout the year but the Institute's Research Executive Committee also periodically issues RFPs on topics of interest to the committee.

News from the Field
NSF's Research.gov to Require Multifactor Authentication as of October 27th
SciENcv Logins - Be Consistent!
NSF currently requires the use of SciENcv to create biosketches and Current & Pending documents required of all senior personnel on NSF grant proposals. NIH documents may be created using SciENcv. When you log in to SciENcv for the first time, make a note of how you logged in (NSF ID, eRA Commons ID, login.gov) and use the same method each time you log in. Otherwise, if you login to SciENcv using different methods, the site will create an account for each login method.
