Dear Colleagues and Retirees,

We are writing to you today with a deep sense of responsibility and a commitment to listening and supporting our people. Over the past several weeks, we have been engaged in a period of intentional listening with our shared leadership community and with many of you individually during the transition of the GVSU Retiree Medical Program.

Our primary goal is to ensure that everyone has the support and time they need to make the best decision between the lump sum payout or annuity, and for those currently enrolled in the retiree medical plan to have the support they need to find similar or better insurance coverage. We understand that these changes may be unsettling and that many are still working to understand the transition.

We want you to know we have heard you and we are here for you.

In response to the feedback we have received, we are implementing the following final adjustments to the transition process:

  • Timeline Extension to May 1: We have heard that the current timeline feels too fast for some. To allow for more deliberate planning, we are extending the decision deadline to May 1, 2026.
  • Opportunity to Reconsider: For those who have already made a selection, you will be able to reconsider and update your choice during this extended period if you choose.
  • Annuity Access Age Adjusted to 62: We heard many of you regarding the previous annuity access age of 65, given that the old plan included pre-65 benefits. While we must establish a specific age for the program, we acknowledge that 62 is a more representative average for pre-65 retirement, and we are moving access to 62 versus 65.
  • 1:1 Direct Support for Insurance Navigation: Dedicated support is being secured to help you navigate finding equivalent or better insurance coverage. When we have the final details of this 1:1 support service, we will reach out directly to affected individuals with that information.

Some of you who have engaged with alternative coverage resources have already shared positive feedback around finding viable or preferred options for your health needs.

We believe these final adjustments demonstrate the power of our shared leadership and our commitment to leading with empathy and clarity. Thank you for your continued service to GVSU and for your patience as we work together to ensure a stable future for the University and for all members of our community.

Thank you,
