| Service Above Self
by Ron Stakem
“Service Above Self” is the motivating motto and the shared common duty of all Rotarians in the world. It is a bold challenge, a big “ask.” That is especially true now when so many people, home and abroad, face a myriad of life’s pressing uncertainties. Our renewed effort of selfless service are needed now as much as ever. By making that personal effort to serve our fellowman we add value to the lives of individuals and to the communities in which they live. In return, we are rewarded with a fulfilling sense of personal accomplishment and, as is often the case, we make friends and have fun together all along the way. Somehow, it matters less what we do together as Rotarians as long as our joint effort is guided by our “Four Way Test.” So, thank you, all Rotarians, for your past service. Now, please join with me to recommit and resolve in 2026 to again serve in some way, personally and financially, by offering generously of your time, treasure, and many talents to enhance the lives of others.
How can you serve? Well, the existing committee activities of our Club 29 are many and varied, and all are worthy. If in the past you have not been active in committee work, please join one or more. Even if you have been a regular committee participant, maybe join another committee or even start a new activity. In either case, ask a Rotarian friend to partner with you in joining a committee. Stretch beyond your “comfort zone.” READ MORE

| Rotary Magazine - February 2026
Think you're good at chess? There's a 3-year-old in India with an international rating ready to school you. In this issue of Rotary magazine, we take you to what is arguably the most chess-obsessed country on Earth. Read how India's Rotary clubs are tapping into that passion for the game to open pathways to educational advancement and connection.
When he's not championing peacebuilding or polio eradication, Olayinka Hakeem Babalola might be thinking about scuba diving, one of his favorite outdoor pursuits. In another of this month's features, find out more about "Yinka," your 2026-27 Rotary president.
And speaking of peacebuilding, February is Rotary's Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month. In our "Goodwill" column, a former chair of the Rotary Action Group for Peace explores whether the eight Pillars of Positive Peace can support efforts in Rotary's other areas of focus. And in our "Where are they now?" profile, read about a Rotary Peace Fellow who opened a school to help refugees in Germany, Denmark, and Sweden to land tech jobs.

| Rotary District 5750 Monthly Theme Newsletter – Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month - February 2026
Every February, Rotarians across the world stop and put extra focus on one of the most important things we do, Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention. In Rotary, peace is not just “no fighting.” It is people understanding each other, having real opportunities, and treating one another with basic respect. Peace comes from education, stable jobs, strong communities, and the everyday choices that pull people together instead of pushing them apart.
Here in Rotary District 5750, peacebuilding usually does not start in some big international meeting. It starts right here at home. It shows up in how we greet a new member, how we work with local groups, and how we listen even when we do not agree. Mentoring kids, helping with literacy, supporting mental health, cleaning up neighborhoods, all of that matters. Peace is not just a global idea. It is something we either practice locally or we do not practice at all. READ MORE
