Dear Graduate School Community,
Welcome back and Happy New Year. We are starting the semester with several opportunities to build community and make meaningful connections.
  • Designing Your Graduate School, hosted by GPAS & GPCS, will take place on Tuesday, January 27. This 6-week program connects graduate students to brainstorm ways to enhance their graduate school experience.

  • Collab and Connect: A Research-Focused Speed Friending event will take place on Tuesday, January 27, offering a welcoming space to meet new colleagues and grow your research network.
     
  • Librarians and Lunchables: The Graduate School and VU Libraries Social Hour will take place on Wednesday, January 28. This event will provide a relaxed setting to connect with fellow graduate students and learn more about the library resources available to support your work.
Looking ahead, mark your calendar for the Career Colloquium, which will take place from February 16 - February 20. This weeklong series is designed to support your professional development and help you prepare for a wide range of career pathways.

Designing Your Graduate School Experience Program
Join GPAS and GPCS for the Designing Your Graduate Experience program! This 6-week program, starting Tuesday, January 27, from 10 - 11:15 a.m. in Central Library 800FA, connects graduate students to brainstorm ways to enhance their graduate school experience. Participants will reference Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, receiving a copy of the book to guide weekly activities. Graduate students at any stage are welcome to apply. 
Collab & Connect: Research-Focused Speed Friending
Join us on Tuesday, January 27, from 4 - 5 p.m. in Alumni Hall Lounge (100) to meet with potential collaborators, discuss your research, and brainstorm interdisciplinary project ideas! Snacks will be provided. Register today!
Librarians & Lunchables: The Graduate School + VU Libraries Social Hour
Join us on Wednesday, January 28, from 12 - 1 p.m., in the Central Library Community Room for a social hour in collaboration with VU Libraries. This is a great opportunity to spend quality time with fellow graduate students and to meet your subject librarian, who is eager to learn about your research interests! Lunch will be provided. Midweek Mixer is Back!
Join us Thursday, January 29, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall Lounge (100) for our First Midweek Mixer of the semester! We will have an assortment of treats such as galaxy brownies, blondies, & millionaire bars from Baked on 8th!

Graduate and Postdoc Academic Success (GPAS) Program
Co-Working Space for Graduate Students and Postdocs: GPAS will host a co-working space every Thursday from January 8 - April 23, from 1 - 3 p.m. in Alumni Hall Lounge (100). Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided!

Postdoc Award Nominations for The Graduate School Honors Banquet 
Graduate students are invited to nominate postdoctoral scholars for the following awards for the Honors Banquet! Your nominations will highlight the contributions in mentorship, research, and service that postdocs make in our academic community.

T.H.R.I.V.E. Grant Extension
The new T.H.R.I.V.E. Grant (Transformation through Honoring Relationships, Innovation, Values, and Empowerment) offers seed funding for student-led projects that foster collaboration and create lasting impact across campus. The spring application deadline is Friday, January 23.

NanoDay & the 2026 VINSE Image Competition Winners!
VINSE hosted 59 posters at the 25th annual NanoDay, highlighting the diversity of nanoscale science and engineering at Vanderbilt. Students from various fields presented their latest findings during a busy two-hour session and participated in the Image Competition. Read More.

Center for Social Ventures Annual Summit
Join Vanderbilt's Center for Social Ventures for their Summit at the Owen Graduate School of Management on Friday, January 30, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The event will feature a keynote address by Chancellor Daniel Diermeier and will foster interdisciplinary learning through talks and panel discussions focused on social innovation in addressing environmental, social, and geopolitical challenges. This free event is open to all Vanderbilt students, staff, faculty, and the Nashville community. Breakfast, lunch, and hors d'oeuvres will be provided, followed by a social hour.  RSVP  to secure your spot!

The Writing Studio 
The Writing Studio offers weekly writing groups for graduate students and postdocs during the Spring semester on Tuesdays from 2 - 5 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. To join, complete the registration form. 
Spring Writer's Retreat
The Writing Studio’s annual Dissertation Writers’ Retreat series provides dissertating graduate students with time to work individually in a quiet, collegial atmosphere. Learn more.

English Language Center Individual Language Coaching
Want to strengthen your academic English this spring? The English Language Center (ELC) offers cost-free EAP courses and Individual Language Coaching for VU students, faculty, staff, and scholars. Support is available for academic writing, speaking, pronunciation, and more. Registration is open and space is limited.
The First-Generation, Low-Income Group Book Club
The First-Generation, Low-Income (FGLI) Group, in collaboration with the Peabody Library, is hosting a book club in the Reflection Room during the spring semester. Participants will read "Moving Up Without Losing Your Way: The Ethical Costs of Upward Mobility" by Jennifer Morton over winter break. This book directly addresses the experiences of FGLI students navigating elite institutions like Vanderbilt, focusing on identity tensions, family dynamics, and ethical questions related to upward mobility. 9th Annual First-Generation Graduate and Professional Student Symposium 
Registration is now open for the 9th Annual First-Generation Graduate and Professional Student Symposium, which will take place on Friday, February 20. This virtual event is designed specifically for first-generation graduate and professional students and serves as a platform for connecting and building community among participants from across the country. Registration will close on Monday, February 16 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
