Protecting Physician-Led Care in WA State

The State Declines Naturopath Scope Expansion Proposal

For years, KCMS has worked tirelessly to uphold the highest standards in medicine and ensure that physicians' voices are heard amid the growing push to expand non-physician scope of practice. The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has now released its final assessment on a proposal from the Washington Naturopathic Physicians Association seeking to broaden naturopaths' scope of practice—including the authority to prescribe controlled substances and perform additional medical procedures.

After careful review, the DOH recommended against these changes, citing significant concerns about patient safety and inadequate training standards. This decision reinforces the importance of physician-led care and aligns with KCMS’s ongoing efforts to prevent the unchecked expansion of non-physician roles at the expense of patient safety.

Key findings in the DOH report include:
Educational Gaps: The proposal failed to demonstrate that naturopaths possess the minimum education and training required to safely prescribe Schedule II-V controlled substances. Current naturopathic pharmacology training is not standardized and lacks the foundational sciences incorporated into other medical programs.

Limited Clinical Exposure
: Naturopathic clinical training is largely confined to naturopathic-only settings, offering little exposure to the broader medical environments where controlled substances are routinely managed.

Ambiguity in Procedures: The definition of "minor office procedures" within the proposal was deemed too vague, preventing proper evaluation of training adequacy for these procedures.
We encourage you to read the full report here: Sunrise Review Naturopathic Physician Scope of Practice Report to the Legislature, December 2024 created by the WA State DOH.
