High Blood Lead Levels in Children Consuming Recalled Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have issued a health advisory regarding high blood lead levels in children consuming recalled cinnamon apple puree and applesauce pouches. Multiple states have reported such cases. Testing of multiple lots of the recalled products found extremely high levels of lead.
This CDC communication provides detailed recommendations for clinicians including counseling patients and caregivers to not eat the products named in the recall, testing children for lead if they have consumed a recalled product, and recognizing symptoms of lead poisoning. Clinicians should contact their local poison center (1-800-222-1222) for advice on diagnosing and managing lead toxicity.
