Lessons From the Dinner Table: The Goy, The Girl, and the Gefilte Fish
by Ted Streuli

Food!

Breaking bread, a shared meal—it nourishes both the body and the soul. Nowhere are we more likely to learn about one another than at the table.

What could be more Rotarian than that? We eat together at every meeting. I learned the importance of that 47 years ago.

Jenny Lehman’s mother taught piano lessons, baked rhubarb pie and wore her hair in a gray-and-white bun that said, sternly: If you are not nice to my daughter this cleaver could relieve you of several fingers. You would not be the first. Have some pie.

Thankfully, I had every intention of being nice to Jenny Lehman, a nice Jewish girl who attended a nice all-girl Catholic high school. She was part of a circle of friends connected by Temple Emmanuel, where, despite the jade cross hanging around my neck, I attended Friday night services so often I was made an honorary member of the synagogue’s youth group and given, with good humor, my own Jewish name.

Shalom, Streuliwitz.

I liked Jenny Lehman a lot, and wished she liked me more than she did. But while we were trying to sort that out in the way teenagers do, she generously invited me to her house, on Cranleigh Drive, for the beginning of Passover.

Rotary Car Show - June 10

Do you have a fun car or truck, one that causes people to give you a thumbs up when they see it?  The Member Engagement Committee thinks this would be a great "extra".
The date is June 10  plus a rain date of June 17, when we'll all drive ours to Rotary.  We'll put them on the front row at St. Luke's, arriving a little early and staying a little late, to give our fellow Rotarians a chance to look them over.  Please email or text  626-660-5446  Paul Moore with what you have, if you're willing to come play!

Volunteer Service Opportunity - Okla. City Memorial Marathon - April 27 - 6:30am-1:30pm

Ron Suttles and I attended the Hydration Station organizing/orientation meeting.   Our assignment is to operate the hydration station at mile 17 on the marathon course. They expect about 3,600 marathon runners to come  through that station. Race starts at 6:30 am, Sunday, 4/27/25 at which time we should be setting up at our location.   Location is Central Dog Daycare, 5420 N. Classen (Classen Curve), east side of street.  Schedule: 6:30 am set-up.  First expected runner through mile 17 at  7:45 am. Last runner around  12:15 pm. Clean-up about extra hour.  Plan on 6:30 am to 1:30 pm.    Rain or shine. Dress in layers for success!!

This is a larger manpower commitment than the relay exchange.   We are expected to have 25-30 volunteers.  There will be a sign-up form in the newsletters.  We need your help to recruit another Rotarian or other buddy.  Only those over 15 years old who are registered may hand out water or nutrition. Otherwise,  children are welcome (actually very encouraged to attend and cheer, work, etc.).  If you have not already registered and can attend, please register asap at Volunteer – Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon   Use group code 20Water25.  And when you register please let either me or Ron Suttles know.

We are allowed to brand our location, decorate behind the curb of the racecourse, and  provide entertainment.  Share your ideas with us (or just let it be your surprise). Email or call with any questions or suggestions.  Let's together make this a 25th anniversary "Run To Remember."  Thank you.  Ron Stakem 405-923-5044 (cell)
