Scholars Travel Funding awards increase to $750 (with $375 match) starting July 1 Scholars’ Travel Fund awards help full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members present research at academic meetings in North America. As of July 1, 2023 the STF award will increase to $750 per trip, with a required match of $375. The match may be supplied by the applicant’s department, external grants, and/or other appropriate sources. CAS OOR is in process of updating our STF documentation to reflect this change.
CAS Proposal Preparation Program funding, applications accepted anytime Provides up to $3,000 to support faculty members as they prepare an external funding proposal. Funds may support activities like collecting pilot data, purchasing equipment, travel to archives, and data analysis. The upcoming standard deadlines for major NIH funding programs are below. If you are planning to submit an NIH proposal this summer, please let CAS OOR know as soon as possible!
R01 Research Grants -- new proposals: June 5; renewals or resubmissions: July 5
R21, R23, R33, etc. Other Research Grants and Cooperative Agreements --

NEH Humanities Initiatives at Colleges and Universities, apply by May 9

Grants to strengthen teaching and study of humanities at institutions of higher education by developing new or enhancing existing programs, resources, or courses that explore, interpret, and preserve the diversity of human cultures, ideas, and practices. Projects must address a core topic or set of themes drawn from humanities areas such as history, philosophy, religion, literature, or humanities-informed composition and writing skills.
Simons Foundation Pivot Fellowship, apply by May 15

Supports researchers who have a strong track record of success and achievement in their current field, and a deep interest, curiosity and drive to make contributions to a new discipline. Fellows receive one year of salary support of the fellow’s academic-year salary and a $10,000 research, travel and professional development allowance during the fellowship training year. Mentors receive a $50,000 research fund during the fellowship year.

NSF’s most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education. NSF especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.

NEH Summer Stipends, apply by Sept. 20

Summer Stipends support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months in summer 2024. NEH funds may support recipients’ compensation, travel, and other costs related to the proposed scholarly research. This is a limited submission opportunity -- only 2 scholars from UNCG may apply. ... about the College's process for applying to External Fellowships?
There are 3 important steps CAS faculty members should follow, even for fellowships where the faculty member can submit the fellowship application directly to the funder.
1. Review the CAS Policies on Research Assignments, Fellowships, and Off-Campus Assignments. Key point: For tenured/tenure-track faculty, CAS will match the fellowship stipend (up to 1/2 your base salary), but this CAS support is available only once every three years. 2. Work with CAS OOR to create a Cayuse record that will store key proposal documents and allow for approvals by your department, college, and university.
3. Complete the CAS Fellowship Notification form and send to CAS OOR, or upload to Cayuse.Please reach out to our office with questions!
