Fact Check LIke a Rotarian
by Rachel Hubbard

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the Rotary Four-Way Test. Specifically the phrase “Is it the truth?” has been something I’ve been pondering. It’s something many of us struggle with these days. With the rise of artificial intelligence, information we see people we trust post on social media and a fractured information environment that looks a lot like a choose your own adventure novel.

In the last several months, I’ve been asked to speak several times about the concept of media literacy. Specifically, media literacy is defined as the ability to critically analyze stories presented in the mass media and determine their accuracy or credibility.

Once this task was solely the role of journalists, but in today’s environment, we must all have sharp minds and be media literate. Tricky information with partial truths abounds, and it can affect all of us.

For example, in February, a website out of Topeka posted an article over a weekend saying there would be 600 layoffs at Tinker Air Force Base the following Monday. By the time Monday rolled around, I saw dozens of city and state officials and other opinion leaders around the Oklahoma City area reposting this information.  READ MORE

Volunteer Service Opportunity - Okla. City Memorial Marathon - April 27 - 6:30am-1:30pm

Club 29's  assignment is to operate the hydration station at mile 17 on the marathon course. They expect about 3,600 marathon runners to come  through that station. Race starts at 6:30 am, Sunday, 4/27/25 at which time we should be setting up at our location.   Location is Central Dog Daycare, 5420 N. Classen (Classen Curve), east side of street.  Schedule: 6:30 am set-up.  First expected runner through mile 17 at  7:45 am. Last runner around  12:15 pm. Clean-up about extra hour.  Plan on 6:30 am to 1:30 pm.    Rain or shine. Dress in layers for success!!

This is a larger manpower commitment than the relay exchange.   We are expected to have 25-30 volunteers.    We need your help to recruit another Rotarian or other buddy.  Only those over 15 years old who are registered may hand out water or nutrition. Otherwise,  children are welcome (actually very encouraged to attend and cheer, work, etc.).  If you have not already registered and can attend, please register asap at Volunteer – Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon   Use group code 20Water25.  And when you register please let either me or Ron Suttles know.

We are allowed to brand our location, decorate behind the curb of the racecourse, and  provide entertainment.  Share your ideas with us (or just let it be your surprise). Email or call with any questions or suggestions.  Let's together make this a 25th anniversary "Run To Remember."
Thank you.  Ron Stakem 405-923-5044 (cell)

Rotary Car Show - June 10

Do you have a fun car or truck, one that causes people to give you a thumbs up when they see it?  The Member Engagement Committee thinks this would be a great "extra".
The date is June 10  plus a rain date of June 17, when we'll all drive our cars to Rotary.  We'll put them on the front row at St. Luke's, arriving a little early and staying a little late, to give our fellow Rotarians a chance to look them over.  Please email or text  626-660-5446  Paul Moore with what you have, if you're willing to come play!

 World Community Service Travel Opportunity

We have a travel opportunity available through our World Service Committee. Thanks to your contributions to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, we were able to complete an Auto Mechanics Training Global Grant in Piura, Peru.
Mary Jane Calvey is leading the efforts of planning a trip to celebrate the successful implementation of this grant in Peru and invites any Rotary member plus their spouse who may want to travel to the celebration and meet fellow Rotarians from the Miraflores Rotary Club of Piura.  Travel dates will be September 20 through September 27, 2025 and a travel agent in country is assisting in lodging and transport accommodations.  Should you wish to join, you can even choose to add time in Peru if you want to explore other parts of the beautiful country. For more information, please contact
Mary Jane Calvey.
