Collaborative for Community Engagement and Concrete Couch
| |
|
While the Office of Sustainability continues its mission to foster communication, collaboration, and coordination between the college and stakeholders in the broader community, we recognize that we are not alone in this effort. As such, we would like to highlight the Collaborative for Community Engagement’s (CCE) mission in co-creating community-engaged learning experiences to help students become engaged citizens. One way that you can forge a path to create a more sustainable community is by becoming involved with various CCE projects such as Concrete Couch. Concrete Couch is a that was founded by Steve Wood ’84. The group aims to engage the local Colorado Springs community in art and educational projects. If you would like to sign up to volunteer with this organization, here or email Education Director and Volunteer Coordinator, Caitlin Hannigan, at caitlin@concretcouch.org.

Meet the Team: Waste Team
This block, we are proud to introduce you to the OOS Waste Team, which is involved in a variety of sustainability initiatives on campus, from establishing recycling and composting bins with signs in all academic buildings, to waste audits, composting programs, and improving the residential waste infrastructure. The team also works on special programs, such as Trash Peak during Earth Week, and on smaller projects with our food catering company, Bon Appétit. This academic year, we have a team of three interns: and Chase Hetler ’25, along with their three dedicated volunteers: Martina Hasler Arantes ’25, Lauren Moore ’26, and Em Renetzky ’27. Rennie ’24 enjoys the people she gets to work with, as she reflects on how wonderful her team is! Sone ’24 is an Environmental Science major and enjoys the collaborative aspect of the OOS, especially within the team, as her fellow interns’ contributions are integral. She is also currently working on a consulting project with CC Admissions. Lastly, Hetler ’25 is an Environmental Science and Political Science double major and is currently studying ecology and ecosystem science in Costa Rica with CC Professor Miro Kummel. Let’s give a BIG thanks to our wonderful Waste Team for all their hard work!

Recap of Goth Prom and CC Exchange Flair Pop-Up
Thanks to the Butler Center, CCSGA, Office of Sustainability (OOS), and Arts & Crafts, Goth Prom was a huge success, and we hope you all had an amazing time! The CC Exchange’s Pop-Up event allowed students to reduce their Halloween-related waste, and swap costumes and other items for Goth Prom. With students lined up minutes before the event commenced, it is evident CC students recognize that through communal efforts, we can work together to reduce our individual carbon footprints. Great job everyone! If you have any leftover costumes from this Halloweekend, or any other clothing you would like to donate, remember the CC Exchange is open on Thursdays from 2:00-4:00 p.m. during weeks 1-3.

Recap of the Plant Exchange from Block 2 and Follow Request
We are truly grateful for the overwhelming response to our Block 2 Plant Exchange event at the OOS. It was such a success that we didn’t even have a chance to take photos of the event, as we sold out of all spider plants, snake plants, and succulents within the first 20 minutes! We wish you the best of luck in fostering a healthy and green environment for your plants. In case you missed out though, Rennie ’24 highlights “we are super excited to have another event soon to continue bringing plants into the CC community!” For more information check out the Plant Exchange website here. Also, make sure to look out for future events by following us on our social media pages on Instagram and Facebook @ccsustainability, where you can see our campaign as we work toward a more sustainable future, not only for the campus but the broader community as well. On our social media pages, you will find vital event information, sustainability success stories, job listings, and a peek into the work that we do here at the office.
