Japan, 1995, Shunji Iwai
Hiroko is still in the depths of grief from losing her fiancé Itsuki Fujii in a tragic mountain-climbing accident. On the day of his two-year memorial service, Hiroko finds an old address of Itsuki’s, and sends him a letter. Shockingly, she receives a reply, from a woman who also happens to be named Itsuki Fujii. As the two women exchange letters, coincidences and memories of Hiroko’s fiancé bring them together in ways they could have never imagined. Writer-director Shunji Iwai's feature debut, LOVE LETTER was a box-office phenomenon upon its initial release and has been hailed as "gloriously brilliant" and the "greatest romance story from Japan" by Asian Movie Pulse. "Extremely attractive and succulently filmed" --Variety. Subtitles. 117 min.

Mexico/USA, 1987, Alex Cox
In the 1850s, American soldier of fortune William Walker (Ed Harris) with funding from American investors leads a band of mercenaries to Nicaragua to install a new government by a coup d'etat, finally declaring himself president. Shot in Granada, Nicaragua at the height of contra incursions, WALKER is full of purposeful anachronisms: magazines, Zippo lighters, and helicopters. From the director of Repo Man and Sid and Nancy, this film has grown in stature and (unfortunately) relevance since it's initial release. 95 min.
Classics In 35mm. Special admission $14/$11.
Cox's latest, Dead Souls, shows 7/26. Sunday 5:45 pm
