Things That Endure

by Emily Lang
I have a favorite ornament on my Christmas tree

It’s a red apple -- its handle a white candy cane with red stripes that have gone crunchy and are peeling away from a once shiny veneer.  My name, Emily, is handwritten, probably with a white paint pen, in my grandmother’s shaky hand. We lost her almost 30 years ago, but there she is, a perpetual part of our holiday celebrations, year after year, after year.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about things that endure.

Maybe it’s the recent political elections … there’s so much fear and uncertainty as half the country pounds their chests in victory while the other half laments a loss.  It was our nation’s 60th presidential contest and a difficult battle to be sure, but here we are again with change as the only certainly before us.

Maybe it’s the passing of time, seemingly happening right before my eyes as our son transitions from boyhood into young adulthood. We all watch as our families morph into something new each year, our roles changing with the seasons. It’s unfair, really. The bratty child in me wants to stew in comfort, not adapt and then adapt again! But here we are, another holiday season upon us, and adapt we will.

Dec. 7 - Pearl Harbor Day - It Changed the World
by Larry Stein

Sitting silently on the east side of Broadway just south of NE 13th Street, there is a hunk of metal which provides a timeless reminder of how important December 7th is for so many around the world.  On that date in 1941 the events which led this metal anchor eventually to Oklahoma City make December 7th much more than just one more day to shop before the holidays and Christmas.

‘The Day of Infamy’ caused The Second World War and thrust The United States into a long-avoided conflict which remade the world powers into Superpowers.  Until then, no one numbered World Wars and with the US isolated by oceans on each side, another international war breaking out was unheard of.

The unprovoked attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy sunk the USS Oklahoma in Pearl Harbor and claimed 429 lives.  Others survived by jumping burning oil.  Some were trapped in the capsized vessel and waited days for holes to be drilled in the hull so they could escape.

The USS Oklahoma never made it back into service.  The ship was set for salvage in 1943, READ MORE

Rotary Magazine - December 2024 - for Rotarian Subscribers
Earlier this year, a town in Japan put up a temporary barrier to obscure views of Mount Fuji in hopes of deterring throngs of selfie-snapping tourists overwhelming the site. It was just one of a number of extraordinary steps that communities around the world have taken to combat overtourism. In Rotary magazine's travel issue, we consider new, sustainable ways to see the world, including through ecotourism and voluntourism. And we ask veteran travel writer Terry Ward for an alternative bucket list to get off the beaten path.

digital copy of the December 2024 issue.
Speaking of alternative destinations, this month we also journey to the International Space Station with Samantha Cristoforetti, European Space Agency astronaut — and Rotarian.

The celebration of all things travel continues with writer and broadcaster Scott Simon, who reflects on a life on the road that's included plenty of misadventure (he was once attacked by fire ants while lost in the jungle) on the path to enlightenment.

Rotary members know well the power of cultural exchange, perhaps none more so than the members of the International Travel and Hosting Fellowship. Learn more in the Our Clubs section.

Want to see your photography in Rotary magazine? There's still time to enter the 2025 Photo Awards, open to Rotary members and their families. Submit your photos by 31 December. Winning photos will appear in the June 2025 issue.
